No. You could have a trap set at night though.

Discharging firearms at night is a federal offence...it's part of the firearm law. So no you can't....not legally.

Hunh?
Care to post a link to that "law"?

It is however, illegal to hunt a night - a provincial law.

Had this problem the other night, right behind the house. Sent the dog out to deal with it.

It is illegal to discharge a firearm after legal light period doesn't matter if your hunting, target shooting etc

You can shoot a .22 at night in Ontario for raccoons over coon hounds.

It has been posted here many times before...it is in the firearms act.

I've shot coyotes at night.. Not in Alberta, but in some more civilized places like Texas

Even used a hand gun and an AR15. It was fun and I never shot up one school, mall, or cinema.

I know for a fact that there is no Federal Law that states that you cannot shoot a firearm at night.

As for Alberta provincial law I was unaware that you could not shoot at night. I would like to see where it is stated that it is illegal to shoot at night as I haven't been able to find it.

Serious question: can one use a crossbow at night? If so, does the yote get within range of one?

Perhaps if it was going for your throat....

Loads of rural guys have taken a shot at a bothersome animal at night to protect livestock or other property..

I have never heard of even one that had to explain himself for it.

Now...whether that is because its A-OK or because nobody ever bothered to question it is anyones guess.

I know nothing of crossbows, but I do know for a fact that coyotes can be called into arm"s length.

the Alberta wildlife act says:

Discharge of firearm at night
53 Except at a lawfully established and operated shooting range, a
person shall not discharge a firearm during the period referred to in
section 28.

Section 28 says:

Hunting at night
28 A person shall not hunt wildlife, except by trapping, during
the period commencing at 1/2 hour after sunset and ending at 1/2
hour before sunrise the following day.

So now we know...

I had a friend that kept bringing me coyotes to skin that all had bolts between the eyes. Always amazed me he could get a coyote to pose long enough to dart them. They had to be close.
I'm pretty sure he would use a quiet squeaker call that would get the coyote to cock his eyes and ears intently at 3 to 10 yards. And oddly they wouldn't see the bolt coming quick enough to react. Little pelt damage too.
