Default Which scope to buy?

So, should I buy the new VX 2 4-12 40mm or should I buy a used VXIII 4-14
50mm for the same cost as the new VX 2 ? That's my dilema right now. There are alot of scopes to choose from and if I'm spending 600 dollars I want to get the right scope. I have looked at other scopes, but have narrowed it down to this new VX 2, however I found this 3 or 4 yr old VXIII a friend of mine is selling and its in great condition, but I'm hearing that the new VX2 is as good as the older VXIII. Which one should I go for?

Guess I am prejudiced as I dont like 50 mm scopes since they have to be mounted so high above barrel.
I dont think the VXlll is going to have the new argon crypton filling replacing the nitrogen as think that happened with VX-3 in about 2010, it may have changed since I got out of the business but I had not heard of the VX2 containing argon crypton gas yet (larger molecules and not water attracting (more inert gas)).
the glass on the VXlll should be better than the VX2.
Having said that the new VX3 may be $600 new but the old style VXlll or even VariX lll are not worth $600 used. By the same token when I was selling scopes VX2 new were somewhere in the range of $370 and $429 so it appears you are comparing apples and oranges.

The VX 2 4-12 40mm AO retails for 619. 00 and the new VX3 4-14 50mm is close to 1000 if I'm not mistaking, at the major outdoor stores here in Edmonton. I guess they've gone up a bit in price since you were selling them. However, the VX2 3-9 with basic reticle is just under 500, I believe. Thanks for the info.

One thing that might make a difference betweent the two is cross-hairs. On a new scope you can choose the crosshair you like most, the used one may not have your number one option.

That's true Lefty. Would definetly need to look into that. I'm was leaning towards the new VX2, but this older VXIII is in mint shape, but still 3 or 4 years old. I do want the LR duplex. I also agree with WWbirds, the 50mm Obj needs to be mounted higher, so that means new rings too.

I have heard many times the VX2 is equal to the older VXIII. Equal money would cause me to go new, as I also prefer a 40mm.
