it IS one of the best all-round calibers available,, be it hunting or long distance competition shooting,,

1 will kill elk cleanly and with authority at 400+ meters,
2 will kill most anything at less distance or Wayyy far out! if YOU are capable of precision shooting

3 will NOT turn your brains to MUSH from recoil like many so called Magnum calibers that can accomplish much the same results as the 6.5x .284 with FAR more expense and added recoil,

Berger 140 gr VLD bullets RULE in the 6.5 with a BC of more than .600 ! and are devastating on big game OR varmints !

I have one, just bought it last fall. Still doing load development but so far I really like this rifle. I'm using 120 gr. Hornady GMX bullets, but have a box of Bergers here as well. Also, Nosler is supposed to have a long range Accubond for this calibre, haven't seen them yet though. Plan is to make it my "go to" deer rifle.

Great calibre but from what i have read if you put it too hard your barrel life will go to ****. I found my sweet spot right at 2980fps with 140gr vld's. Put 3 shots at 100 yards under .250 moa

Years back I built myself a 6.5-06. Best rifle I ever owned. I see no reason why a 6.5-284 would be much different. I used 140 grain Sierra Game Kings. Anything on the business end dropped like a stone.

I wouldn't consider that load anemic. I run the 140 amax at 2900 out of a 28" tube. Still has less drop at distance than most other cartridges.

The kid's 6.5/284, for all intent and purpose as far as pure accuracy goes,, was washed out the first summer he got it.
It is still however, a super accurate hunting rifle and an excellent cartridge.

Smile Washed out?

Cat is there more info? how many rounds? How hot? What powder? Is this common? What can you do, if anything to rehabilitate the barrel?

My son has one too.

Lots of info on the WWW, many competitive shooters recommend setting the barrel back an inch after the first 1000-1500 rounds to get the accuracy back for another 1000 rounds before the barrel is fully shot-out. Of course this is grossly oversimplified - go read the threads.

One must realize that when shooters that compete are shooting far more than a guy who uses his rifle for strictly hunting.

The type of powder does not matter so much as the number of rounds fired.
It is not unusual for match shooters to go through enough ammo to wash out a throat in one summer.
The rifle can be re-chambered, or you can just use it for hunting and offhand competitions, but for a rifle not to hold under 1/2" after 1,000 rounds is pretty common.

Get yourself a 6.5x55 instead and load it to modern pressures with lapua brass.

Reasonable barrel life is but one the virtues of the .308 Winchester.

I have owned three different chamberings of that caliber, the 6.5x47L, the 260rem, and the 6.5x55. I still own the 260rem, and the 6.5x55. I avoided the 6.5x284, because of the short barrel life. The 6.5x55, is my favorite cartridge for longer range target use.

The 6.5-06 I built had virtually the same case capacity as the 6.5-284. After it was built I loaded and fired about 100 rounds before I found my best load. Over the course of the next three years I hunted with it annually firing a dozen or so shots to check my zero. Then like many of us I decided to sell it for "another project". The fellow I sold it to still hunts with it and claims it still groups well and gets his game every year. That was 16 years ago. I guess it would be safe to say that in this kind of scenario the barrel will last many years.
