To be fair, the High Level bridge would fall into the river too if it wasn't maintained. Closing Keillor road was a planned destruction through neglect.
Three city counselors lived in the neighbourhood at the time.
I know this because I lived in the neighbourhood at the time. I was against closing it.

Used to fish below the end of the world. The city should put a zipline across to the other side of the river from the concrete piling.

I both believe and don't believe this. I know neighbourhood residents wanted it shut down for years since people used it as a by-pass of Fox Drive on their way downtown or to the University, and for that I don't blame the residents as I wouldn't want heavy streams of traffic through my residential neighbourhood.

However, council also spent a ton of money putting in those concrete reinforcements that created the 'End of the World'. I guess maybe for the facade that they gave a damn? I'm not old enough to have gotten the whole story like you did, so any info on it is awesome to hear.

It was always a battle and understandably so. A great shortcut to the university or downtown off Fox Drive that turned the road in front of houses overlooking the river valley, into houses overlooking a freeway during rush hour. Inconvenient for the many, but totally understandable from the perspective of the people who owned the homes.

The bike trail that replaced it, with all the switch backs, is cool though. Talk about a quad killer on the bike.
