Quite literally one is short and the other long.....it depends on the length of the cartridge. A .308 for example is shot from a short action bolt action rifle while a .30-06 would be shot from a long action bolt action, unless you are shooting a Tikka then all their bolt actions are long action regardless of calibre...confused yet?

Basically it is based on the calibre the rifle is chambered in. Some calibres are designed to be shot from short actions and others from long actions depending on the length of the case.

It is all based on the overall length of the cartridge. A cartridge that is longer than 2.8" has to be fed through a long action. A cartridge that will work in a long action will also work in a short action, just not the other way around.

Longdraw now you probly confused him all over again...haha

riffer many people are switching to shorter action like a 270WSM over a 270 win due to a few factors one being ballistics another being quicker follow up shots and one also being a weight advantage to a shorter action.(lighter)

Right now in this market I would select a WSM or short action in either a 270 WSM or 300WSM amybe even thenew 325WSM but not any others ...I also have no knowledge on the WSSM cartriges.

Hope this helps a little

Then you have Sako , which has about 5 action lengths.
Savage has 4 that I know of, 1of which I don't think is made anymore.
