Default 14 foot boat question.

So I am a complete nube at boating. Bought my first boat today. A 14' glasscraft with a 60hp motor.

I called my buddy all excited and he **** on my parade. He told me that motor is way to big for a 14 foot boat and that its unsafe to drive...

Is he right?

I've got a 14' Lund rebel side console from the mid 90's that's rated for a 50hp on the capacity plate so that doesn't seem out of the realm of possibility.

If you have an older outboard (pre mid 80's), the HP ratings were taken at the crankshaft. The newer OB HP output ratings are taken at the propshaft .. a difference of up to 20% less output at the propshaft on older engines.
If it is an older 60 hp OB you will likely be OK from a safety standpoint but a safety inspection will always consider the HP rating labeled on the engine and the max HP rating labeled on the boat.

I have a 14' anchor ski boat I think it's a 1979 with a mid 80's Johnson 60hp motor. No issues in the 3 years I've owned

There will be a ID plate usually on the transom somewhere that will tell you what the HP rating is for the boat . If it says rated for 55hp and you have a 60 I wouldn't lose any sleep over it. I have had several 14 ft glass boats and one 14 ft aluminum and they all had 70 hp outboards on them

Is this boat an older model fibreglass? If so, your 60 HP should be fine. You used to see lots of 70 HP's on 15 foot tri-hulled fibreglass boats.

I agree.

All that matters is the boat's placard ..... it will tell you what the maximum HP rating is to safely (and legally) operate the boat.

They (the government and regulators) test this stuff to make sure you can safely and legally operate the boat.

some insurance company's will not insure if the rated h.p. on boat has been over powered . some due to the elevation in alberta will let you go %10 over the boats h.p. rating .

I ran a glascon 14' w/a 70hp Mercury Thunderbolt for 3 years. My first boat and it was all good.

Default 14 foot boat question.

My personal opinion is that's too much HP for the boat. You can probably make it work, but it may not be safe to operate, especially at max speed.

The best size for this boat in my opinion is max 30hp. How fast do you really need it?

If you need / want more speed to get to the holes faster, consider a bigger boat.

Is there such thing as to much hp lol. Check the tag on the boat if it says your good go fishing and have a great time! One thing might be the weight of the motor hanging on the back of it. Maybe get your self a support from your trailer to the leg. They are cheap and easy to put on.

I have a 14' canoe and a 13' tinner - length has nothing to do with the horsepower ratings that these two boats can use!
Go by the DOT tag

With all that being said... Just bought an older boat and the plate said max of 115 hp and there was a 135 on it.... and that was installed by a dealer in Alberta and I had the original bill of sale....after searching online the same boat I bought had 130-135's on them in the states.... I called the boat manufacture and they said the hull was rated for 130 and sent me a new tag....that said 135hp !! So maybe the original dealer knew something ... I guess what I'm saying is do some research into your boat.... you can't go wrong with due diligence !!

Relax and tell your buddy to chill. I had a 14' fibreglass with a 70 HP Evinrude. Good rig it was until my buddy sank it, but that's a whole other story. I've forgiven him.

I don't know what your particular boat is, but the Glascraft is made by Hourston. They have a 14'4" runabout with a deep v that is rated for 70 hp. I would just check with them.
