Looking for some 22-250 Load Data
Hi all,
I am going to start reloading for my 22-250. It is a Savage Model 11 with a 1:12 twist. I also have a Savage Model 12 with a 26" heavy barrel and the same 1:12 twist. I was shooting factory loaded Winchester Ballistic Silvertips in 55 grain through them. They seemed to work well. With recently getting into reloading I'm looking to make my own. I checked out lots of google searches and my Hornady manual. I am thinking of shooting the Hornady 53 grain V-Max. The manual recommends Varget powder and Winchester WLR primers.
Looking to see what some of you are loading with to know if I'm going in the right direction.
Thanks
DR

From the research I did, Varget seemed to be very popular for the 22-250 along with the 50-55 grain Hornady bullets.
Thanks for the reply

Varget.
And a large rifle primer(brand not so important) I use CCI BR2's.
I've ran many different bullets through my 22-250.
40 gr V-Max's
50 gr Opel's
52 gr Nosler J4 competitions
55 gr V-Max's
I settled on the 55's because I could get them in 250 count boxes.
They also were less spendy in the 250 count too.
Accuracy was perhaps a bit better with the 55's, but really they weren't lights out ahead of the others.
Pay attention to how you size your cases. Don't set the case shoulder back too much, if at all, you'll get way better case life by doing so.

Thanks guys. I was told not to full length size the brass every time but to rather do it once then only neck size them. The Die set I bought is a 3 Die set with a FL Die, seating Die and a neck size Die. I will be sure to pay attention to that.
That was my other concern was availability of some products. Taking a trip south to Calgary in the coming days to hopefully find a more vast selection.
Thanks for the info.

IMR4064 is another powder to employ, very efficient with lighter projectiles under 75 grains.
This list is for 22-250 loads, using a 55gr pill... As always, start low & work up till you see pressure signs.
The blue digits in the left column are chronologically numbered, the higher the number the more recent the load was tested.
Notice that there's 4 loads for Varget & 4 loads using 4064.

For exact loads, I use the nosler on line data website. I chose 4064 for the speed I wanted and the gun likes it, plus I use it for a different cartridge as well

I have a savage accu trigger in 22-250, I have been loading my own since I got my first center fire when I was 16, but that savage gave me a run around, I couldn't seem to find a combination that it was happy with, the best accuracy I could get from it was 2.5 inch group at 100 yards, and with factory loads it was not even close to that, so I started fooling around and I found that the best I could get out of that gun was 1.5 inch at 100 yards with 50 grain vmax 39 grains of 4198 and magnum pistol primers. It does a bit better with 60 grain berger, but I'm a big fan of vmax for coyote because of no exit wound, I don't like sierra blitzking because they tend to blow up on the way in, I shot a coyote between the shoulders with a blitzking at about 75 yards and I had a 6 inch entry wound, I shot another one about the same distance broadside and took his shoulder off but didn't kill him, I had to put another one through his head to finish the job, so the rest of my blitzkings went for target practice.

One should never blindly follow anyone's advise on exact load data posted on the internet, and we as reloaders should never post it, period!! Many reloader sites ban these kinds of posts for a reason. You dont know these people. Get a good reloading book or access their websites is the only safe way to save your face and eye site. Read the book and once you think you have it figured out, read it again.

There are a few guys here that wont steer you wrong. I am using a load recommended to me by Elkhunter11 in my tikka 6.5x55. It shoots great and saved me a bunch of time on load development.

Ya,,, there's thousands on here,,,which are the few you speak of. Get my point? And even still, its darn scary, some evil dude reads these posts and creates an account with one letter difference In the user name of one of the few you speak of,,,, if its someone I trust on here then I would have their contact information and would talk in person. All the posts with exact load data should be removed by the Mods otherwise it leaves the site owner at a liability for allowing it. Thats why other sites ban it, the world is full of twisted sick people, its not safe to use posted data when there are lots of reputable companies supplying it and are accepting the liability. Nosler data is amazing and when they post what they feel is the most accurate load ive found they are pretty darn close everytime. I even worked up loads several times just to end up where they originally said. The purpose of reloading is to shoot more for cheaper, have better more accurate ammo and to shoot better, so what's wrong with developing your own load from safe data starting points. There is nothing anyone can say that would justify using data from a random person on the internet, I dont care if they have 10,000 posts or not, its just foolish.

The trouble with most reloading manuals for the 6.5x55 is the data is for old military rifles that cant take the pressures of modern actions.

You said most, then ask for info an book that is for modern guns, not the data. Bolt in the face is a bad deal. What if someone gives you modern data for an old gun, bolt in face. The books go through all this and usually have the data for both.

Thanks for the replies.
I certainly know not to go straight to what some post on here as far as load data. I know to start low and work up, looking for pressure signs as well as what is working well with my rifles.
My question was more to see what other members are using as far as bullets, powder and primers. Load data may not have being the best title to use. Looking more for info on what others are using.
Thanks

I use only nosler products to date so far, i use the powders they suggest and tried to pick powders they list that multiple guns could use. If The gun didn't like what I was feeding it then I would try another on the list.

I have a new model 12 savage in 22-250 and with 50 vmax bullets the load that shot the best was 35.5 of varget

One may often be surprised as to the accuracy and terminal performance of "not so premium bullets". I for one have had great results with basic Hornady Interlocks, Gamekings, etc. I've learned that the terminology of "premium bullets" is nothing more than what the manufacturers like to corner as a means to promote a new bullet design. Truly though, such old school bullets such as the good old Partitions, Grand Slams, and others are being copied with similar designs, new catchy names but yet perform no better.

I went ahead and purchased some 53 grain V-max bullets, Varget powder and some WLR primers. Going to make a batch next week and do some testing.
Thanks for all the help.

Finally got a chance to fire my test loads yesterday. The best grouping I had was a 5 shot group @ 100 yards. Measured 0.736".
I ended up going with a Winchester case, WLR primer, 34 grains of varget and a Hornady 53 grain V-Max. I am quite happy with the results. Still some room for fine tuning. Would like to get the group down to 0.500" and under.
Thanks for the help.

Another vote for Hornady 55 grain bulllets
I have only used the SP SX for the past 20 years. Sometimes they get hard to find but I like the way they explode inside coyotes so I rarely have any exit hole. My pet load is slower than most like to shoot a 22-250 at 3150 fps but it has been deadly accurate in all 4 22-250's I have owned.
BR2 primer and IMR 4895 powder. Usually a 14 twist but one custom BRNO I own has a 12 twist. Dont think you can go wrong with any of the Hornady offerings in the 50 to 55 range although the boxes of 50 grain sp sx i have I only use in my .223 now.

After shooting 50,52, and 55gr bullets out of a 22-250 and 220 swift for years on coyotes, I shoot 40gr vmax out of my 22-250, 22-250 Ackley, and 220 swift now. And I will never be going back to the heavier bullets.

I considered shooting a lighter bullet like a 40 grain but after reading reviews I ended up going with the 53 grain due to the higher BC and I've always shot a heavier bullet. No real rhyme or reason as to why.
What benefits are using seeing from the lighter bullets?
