Default Global cooling...here to stay or should we pray temps continue to stay flat?

This winter is a record cold one for sure. Very interested to see the effect on Arctic ice after this. Antarctic ice is growing...this winter Arctic ice is impacted by a seasonally warm winter due to the jet stream.

This article summarizes the severity of this winter season.

"Ice coverage, snow pack means spring ending not in sight for tale of two winters
Michelle McQuigge / The Canadian Press
March 19, 2014 02:52 PM

TORONTO - The calendar may say it's spring, but Canadians hoping to feel the effects of a new season will either have to head west or hold their breath.

British Columbia has been basking in balmy breezes and savouring sunny skies for the past several weeks while the rest of the country shivers its way through the coldest winter Environment Canada has documented in 35 years.

Unfortunately, with ice still blanketing the Great Lakes and snow piled high over much of the country, weather watchers predict the shivering will continue for weeks to come.

Environment Canada meteorologist Matt MacDonald said the tale of two winters has been caused by a phenomenon known as a polar vortex — a body of cold air that created a sharp division in the jet stream and formed distinct temperature zones within the country.

"We've had this huge pool of cold air sitting over the eastern half of the country, and really we haven't seen much reprieve from it since December," MacDonald said in a telephone interview from Vancouver.

"The trough in the jet stream kind of began flexing its muscles the beginning of January and really hasn't let off since then."

For provinces located under the polar vortex, namely Saskatchewan and all points east, life has been marked by the sort of frigid temperatures and massive snowfalls that haven't been seen in decades.

MacDonald said national average temperatures are the lowest on record since the winter of 1978-79, adding parts of northwestern Ontario hit lows that haven't been documented since 1938.

These extreme temperatures created historic conditions on the Great Lakes, MacDonald said, adding spring is breaking over bodies of water that are still 92 per cent covered in ice.

The winter saw Atlantic and Central Canada battling crippling ice storms and digging their way out of snowfalls that MacDonald said were 20 to 30 per cent higher than seasonal norms.

The pesky polar vortex was to blame in all cases, he said, adding the cold air that hovered over the region forced weather systems to alter their usual routes through the atmosphere.

"What this polar vortex has done, it's shifted the cold air down from the Arctic over Ontario and Quebec, but it's also shifted the storm track further south," he said.

Most of Canada's loss was the rest of the country's gain, MacDonald said, adding northern regions of the country usually gripped by arctic temperatures enjoyed a warmer than usual winter..."

What will the spring bring?

you're talking about weather, not climate.

Same old story. You can't predict climate on short term trends. Check back in a hundred or two years and you might see something, 500 , a thousand possibly, 10,000 for sure.

Can't remember where I read it but something to do with solar cycles I think suggest we are going to keep getting colder for the next 40 years or something. (from global warming of course)

This isn't the article I read, but found this from 2008...

Solar cycles are 11 years in duration. We just finished the Solar Maximum a few months ago, and now we're heading into a Solar Minimum period. Should bring temperatures down slightly, as we'll be receiving less energy from the sun. However, if temperatures remain stable or even increase slightly it would point to(but not confirm beyond a shadow of a doubt for many) an increase of a greenhouse effect.

Yeas I totally agree....
Because the weather at the center of the universe...Toronto was unusually cold this one year... we can ignore all the emperical data ever collected to establish global trends.

This is good news because applying the same logic it also means that we can hunt grizzly in Alberta because someone drove through the foothills and saw several one day.

While totally ignoring the heatwaves and droughts experienced in the southern hemisphere during their summer.

It used to hit -40 or worse every winter when I was a kid in the late 70`s and early 80`s.I haven`t seen that since. We had a normal winter for a change and all the chicken littles think the sky is falling.Man up.

Could be the start of another trend like you saw in the 70's and 80's.

Enbridge Gas has given residents of Ontario notice the Company is seeking a 40% rise in retail natural gas prices to Ontario consumers,
Enbridge comments the reason for cost increase is high demand and a North American shortage of natural gas,
Enbridge insists that buying US natural gas from the USA to supply Ontario is the culprit !

Interesting how there can be record cold in the provinces yet the Arctic could be warmer than average. I am looking forward to seeing the ice data. Definitely not ice free or anywhere near that being the case. Next year I hope the cold stays north.

Interesting US stats. Avb3 is following the warmth. While the US saw its 37th coldest winter on record California and Florida were warm.

Just goes to show how the climate data can be skewed by simple putting recorders in bad location like biasing certain regions and man made temperature sinks like airports.

Still both Canada and the US had a cold year.

http://www.theguardian.com/environme...ice-expedition

This is a very interesting quote. "As counter-intuitive as it sounds, Dr Jan Lieser, lead author of the ACE CRC report, told me the increase in sea ice is consistent with the changes in a warming world."

So the scientists have their bases covered I guess.

You see the growing sea ice in Antarctica is a result of the warming climate.

Also the melting ice in the Arctic is the result of a warming climate.

Hence the paradox of global warming anarchists. They want to break down society and built it up in their socialist utopian image.

They also cover their butts by saying it will all change and it will stop growing like it has over the past 30 years.

I work for the industry everyone loves to blame for warming, the company (one of the biggest in the world) is pretty staunch about reducing co2..... Excess co2 means wasted money. The only portion of society that isnt all over emmissions reductions is the nieve public and willfully ignorant public burning the products the company produces lol.

Heavy industry is already on the emmissions reduction agenda and has been for some time, governments and the general population should probably catch up at some point
