Moose hunting literature
Hey members.
I am damned and determined to drop a bull this year with my bow. It's been a childhood dream of mine and I have yet to convert.
Wondering if there are any useful books or resources to increase my knowledge and probability.
Willing to put in the work. I want to earn this guy.
Thanks. Clarky

Toughest thing about archery moose hunting is finding the moose, next is knowing what to say and how to say it, next is getting an arrow in him before he runs you over.

When the committee that designed the moose got together, they forgot brains.

I've had the best luck just still hunting into the wind through areas that I know contain moose. Then the trick is seeing them before they see you so you can put a stalk on them. I seem to find myself within bow range of a bull every season using this method. Getting a good shot opportunity is a whole nother can of worms.

Yea thanks man! I did this effectively the last 2 years on a cow and a young bull. I am just trying to add to the ol toolbox.

Calling works well too but the little bit I've done the bulls circle to the downwind side and being that I'm always by myself I've always gotten busted. But I guess I could call and then head 100yards downwind to wait for the bull.

Calling is something I must be doing wrong. Have never had response or positive experience with it. Tough part of self taught hunter I suppose. But I love me some moose hunting.

Never moose hunted before. But a number of years ago me and my partner (his rookie trip) were sitting in a field mid October and mid morning trying out his doe bleat he pulled out of his pocket. I was explaining the rut and when would be best to use it when two bulls came right to us! I just had to go through my archives to find the pic I snapped.

I'm going to try this with a cow decoy this year from a stand. Fingers crossed.

It's nice to hunt them in the rut and having a partner will help out. Like a Lefty said, locating them is the hard part, after that the most important thing is playing the wind.
During the rut they get tunnel vision. I think bec walked up on a bull in relatively open area with a friend doing a cow call on the opposite side of the pond. I held my bow on top of my head and swayed back and forth as I approached. Walked about 300yds right up into shooting range, then proceeded to shoot the bull in my avatar.
What wmu will you be hunting?

Good luck out there, you shouldn't have a problem finding moose out that way. I'd say I shot 9 out of the last 10 moose with my bow, I think the last time I shot one with a rifle was 2005-2006. It's a lot of fun doing a spot and stalk on them with a bow or calling them in during the rut.
I'm really fortunate to have been hunting the same swamp for the past 25yrs and pretty much have the moose figured out there. The hardest part now is getting drawn!
