You don't need a license to hunt or trap beaver on private land but you do need a trapping license in order to sell the pelts, if you wish to do that.

Unless you are "the owner, or occupant", you need a signed permission form and a trapping license. You have been misinformed. Resident, refers to a resident trapping lic.

Thanks, that is what several of us said, no license required if not selling the pelts.

I should have posted that myself, you saved me the trouble.

No disrespect intended Spruce, but I disagree with your interpretation.

This is what the trapping regs has in the front for a definition of a "resident". Is does not refer to being a resident trapper or not

Resident – a person who either • has his or her only or primary residence in Alberta and
- is a Canadian citizen or admitted to permanent residence in Canada, or
- has lived in Canada for the 12-month period immediately preceding the relevant date;

or

•is on full-time service with the Armed Forces of Canada and would, if an election were held under the Elections Act (Canada), be eligible to vote in Alberta under that Act.

Maybe the confusion arises because it does say written permission from the landholder is required, which is the same requirement for trapping private land one does not own or live on.

At the beginning of the page it also says;

Quote:
Regulations allow landholders (residents only) to take immediate
action to control some problem wildlife. The following privileges
are beyond those permitted under fur management licences
As has been shown one of those privileges is specified in this clause,

Quote:
Beaver may be hunted and trapped, without a license and during
all seasons, on privately owned land by the owner or occupant of
the land, or by a resident with written permission from the owner
or occupant of the land.
So clearly in this document, resident does not refer to resident trapping license holder.

This is definitely how I read it as well.

Sorry Spruce
but Resident refers to resident of Alberta. All he needs is written permission

Default Beaver hides

A little confusion with selling beaver hides. A person who traps or shoots beavers on private land do not need a trappers license to sell the hides to a registered fur buyer. It the same as the rule for hunters and farmers who shoot coyotes. The hunter can sell them using his wildlife certificate and the landowner or anyone who he gives permission to can sell both coyote and beavers using his legal land description. As a fur buyer I inquired with a senior wildlife officer in Stettler to make sure of the facts.
