Default Weasel questions.

I'm new to trapping. And have a question about weasels reading in the regs it says that they are not to be trapped in ranges 1-5 west of the 4th meridian. But I can't find in the regs where the ranges are? I'LL be trapping east of pincher creek. Thanks for the help

You're good to go there. It's along the AB/SK border. If you look at a county map you'll see the range designations.

Ranges 1-5 were always considered rat control areas, hence the protection of weasels. But I know the rat control area has narrowed but I'm not sure how far in from the Sask. border it goes. I live in Range 4 and they (rat patrol) don't come here anymore.

Isn't it also Prairie Long Tailed Weasel territory and aren't they protected?

That could be another reason for the protection.

I don't know where that is without consulting a map. I'll assume you're resident trapping. When you fill out your permission forms you'll need the land location. The range is part of that land location.

Eg. Nw of section 20 twp 47 range 1 west of the 4th meridian. As you can see that location falls into the no weasel trapping area.

Its definitely long-tailed weasel country.....I have one living in my yard. But I always thought they were protected because they preyed on the rats coming into eastern Alberta from Saskatchewan.

Smile The Meridians

The 4th is the Sask/AB border. The 5th. is Deerfoot trail.

I'm talking ranges, not meridians. Ranges 1 thru 5 used to protect weasels......and I'm not sure anymore where the line is.

After a quick look at the regs, weasel is still closed in ranges 1-5 , w of the 4th meridian.

That is probibly part of the reason, but they are also a threatened species from what I've read and heard. They were back in the seventies when I first head of them.

I'd like to see one, I've heard that they hare half again as big as the Weasels I'm familure with and I hear they have a tail that's longer then their bodies, that must look cool !

I've seen photos of course but I know from experiance that photos often don't give a preson a proper idea of what a critter is realy like.

I was shocked at how big Seals are, darn things are nearly as big as a cow, without legs.

I think also has to do with the black footed ferret being endangered and is in that area as well as the rat control zone.

Excuse me while I go puke.
