Keeping it to one thread would make it a lot less annoying. Kinda like the hunting partner thread.

Good idea!

Id say a good starting point is near the Wildland parks and along the river on the north end of the zone maybe?

Easiest thing may he to buy the backcountry maps sim card for a gps. If you dont have a gps its a pretty good investment for hunting in the mountain's

Early season elk in 523. Know some farmers up there but that's the only reason we drew there.

I drew a tag in 164 ,might get out for an afternoon this November. Really hoping farmers in the area are ok with me driving through their fields.

Spruce, get as close as you can to the Peace River from either side, you will find elk. I have a relative up their with about 50 quarters of land near the river , he is hunter and over run with elk, but that contact will cost you lots.

If you got the first season you will do fine. They get pretty cagey after that.

Hey JR

I filled a bull tag 2 years ago on a little tasty guy. Orientation is in suffield at the hall, follow all the trucks, can't miss it. It's early. They supply Maps for everyone of where you can go and what gates you go in and out of. Rules are all gone over during the orientation. All though we didn't need help, guys have posted really good reports of how helpful the base guys can be. Lots of miles on your truck. Maybe take extra fuel. My V10 drinks it like whiskey so I did.

We stayed in a hotel in Brooks, closer when coming from Calgary, lots stay in the hat though. No idea about B&B. We avoided the crowds and had a fun hunt. If some one was gong one way we'd go the other.

Good Luck!

My turn

Actually not really, my 13 year old's turn. I hunted 166 last year again, just for whitey's on some nice foot access only land. Called in a nice 4 point muley (no tag) I had never really believed in rattling till then so was quite pumped when it happened. Did have access on some lease land in Rumsey area too but didn't get a chance to make it out.

This year I'm trying 206. Never hunted it before though. But in my research there seems to be a bit of "foot access only" land available to hunt as well. So plan to start scouting (and berry picking!) next weekend with the family. My 13 year old finished his hunter's safety and I'd love to get him his first animal. He got his muley Doe Draw, I got Muley buck. So with two general white tail as well I'd sure hope we don't settle for tag soup. My 10 year old and 8 year old may tagging along too so should be an entertaining fall.

I got a pretty good idea on the areas's I'm going to initially scout and target based on my research, but am certainly open to suggestions via PM (especially if the wife can get in some toon berry picking in!)

Thanks!

Can you guys please quit with the derails and get back on track?! This thread is strictly for the Minimalist Scouting Society members who have to fill their long sought tags. Any more of this and I'll report you to Cat.

Cat's retired don't ya know! And he'd just tell me to stop my typing and get out to the bush with the kids and do some walking, preferably with a SXS or Single Shot or Flint Lock or 303 of some sort

Which is perfectly sound advice (I can do the 303 at least). We'll see if my August scouting can produce some November Venison....

There's a map place in gp. I'd try to get something called patchmap for your GPS. Mine has all the roads, seismic lines, pipelines and 1/4 lines.

I stayed at the clarion in Medicine Hat, it wasn't bad and easy to make the drive out to orientation each morning. They also have a restaurant attached, where we ate supper which was handy.

They give you the map and explain which gate to enter at orientation.

Valhalla pure is great spot to get gov. Topo maps. There is a thread on here for land ownership/land lease maps. Between those and research about specific areas which often comes up with basic maps, access points, blogs from hikers who've hiked the trails, tied in with ihunter and google printed maps...seems to work for me.

We hunt 164 a lot in November and there are some good areas. most of the ranches we hunt on will only let you drive through the fields for retrieval. for mule deer I would check out the south part of the zone.

For BnB just head straight into Medicine Hat, cross the South Sask River and stay on the highway till you hit the first set of lights at the top of the hill. That Clarion, if that's still the name is a decent place, and there's a nice Travel Lodge just down the eastern access road. Lots of good resteraunts and it's quick to get on the road in the morning. If your looking for cheap, and don't mind having crack heads and hookers in the next room. You can go to the motels on the west side of the highway... Ah, probably not that bad, but definetly stay away from that first motel when you cross the bridge on the west side at the first turn off next to the car wash. That literally is where the "Call Girls" take their dates.
Had some friends from BC stay there 2 years ago cause it was the cheapest place they could find. And they left after 1 night.
