Default Would you shoot?

Seen this guy today about a mile from home. Tending a doe in heat I suspect. Called the landowner and got permission. Then got to 250 yards and took a couple pics. I left him there with the doe. Hope he passes some genes on. Not too many five point bucks out here.

Depends what you want.

If you're looking to fill the freezer with any deer, then sure. If you're looking for a 115" rack, then sure. If you're looking for a trophy animal then this guy needs at least 2 more years.

Me personally, I would not shoot. Apparently neither would my son, he's put a 145" minimum on his deer this year and I've watched him pass on a buck that was at least 135" and only 80yds away, totally oblivious to our presence.

"He looks tasty," muttered the Stinky Buffalo, as he turned around and fired up his smoker.

I don't get a lot of time to hunt, I'd shoot him!! Can't eat the rack anyways!!

I normally stick to this rule:

I won't pass something on the first day that I would shoot on the last day.

I've always been happy following that rule... so far.

Well our freezer is over full right now and I would like to see him grow up a bit. The problem is he will likely get shot this weekend when the grid road hunters show up and put the pressure on.

Good decision. You took the time to watch and think, and came to a conclusion that you are satisfied with. That's the important part.

I passed on a good one on my first day last week. No regrets. I have awesome video of him. With his width, I'm sure he will be great in the next couple years. I don't regret not shooting him. Funny thing is, that video of him just gives me confidence knowing I could have had him and decided not to. It's kind of a neat feeling.
For yourself, you executed the stalk and took a good photo of him. Mission accomplished.

I would pass. I rather fill the tags on Does then on bucks like this one. I passed on one similar to this Saturday. He came in to the stand right after I finished filling the elk tags(212) a few minutes before.

In the past half dozen years or so I have taken take a photo just as you did. But this year my son is with me and I am looking for any decent buck so that we can harvest a deer together. Yep - I would try tag that deer.

If I have a tag for something I will shoot, big or small be it a moose, elk, deer, whatever .
Some guys say let it grow and those same guys will smack a small bull moose .
I have s friend who won't shoot a small moose but will slam a fork horn white tail no problem.
Antlers are of no interest to me personally except for making stuff out of like rattling antlers or belt buckles and knife handles

Would really depend on how the freezer looks, and how much time to hunt is left.

I know I know, if I don't someone else will...maybe, maybe not.
They can't get big though if ya don't let em walk.

My first sentence would ultimately make my mind up.

Good choice passing him up. As you say, let him pass on those 5 point genes. If looking for a freezer filler, look for a genetically inferior spiker, fork, or a 2.5 year or older 4 point. Lot's of them around. Let the young 5 points walk. If everyone did this, the results would be surprising.

The deer up here don't have the genetics or food to begin with.
There are some mobster at Suncor and Syncrude but they do not have to leave the lease leases.
Every now and then a crew of wolves would descend there and the Monday morning we would see four of five gut piles on the north dyke where a big herd frequents .
We never hardly had s deer up here until the 80's

If I had the tag I would shoot. I never get overly concerned about antler size.

To me it’s more about the hunting experience than trying to fill the freezer. I would let that buck grow a couple more years

I love the hunting experience as well , "filling the freezer" is not the only thing for sure . If it was I would bother hunting ruffed grouse or pheasants!
