Default Did you ever hear of moose cheese?

There is a 59 acre farm in Sweden known as the Moose House or the Elk House that milks three cow moose and from the milk they of the three moose they make about 660 lb. of moose cheese per year. Three types of cheeses are made. The cheeses contains 12 percent fat and 12 percent protein. It seems it is the only place that sells the moose cheese in the world The third most expensive cheese in the world. Around 1000.00 US per kilo. After looking around it seems this is the real price. Exotic chefs buy it up.

Hmmm It is legal to farm moose in Alberta and a couple sections of bush could support a few moose. So if you farmed a dozen cow moose the potential could be 1200 kilograms of cheese per year. 1200 x $1000.00 = 1.2 million US. or 1.54 million CAN.

On paper it sounds better than grain farming. No cultivation or equipment needed. You only milk the moose from April to September. Each cow will produce only around 5 liters of milk a day.

Forget moose, the area area around timber has some of the the best conditions for cheese making in the world! Good grass, right elevation etc. Why isn't alberta known for world class cheese?

Do I have to own the moose? Can I just milk a wild one? Would people pay extra for wild moose cheese?

I'm seriously cracking up over a coffee right now picturing someone trying to milk a wild moose.

Frigging kid got me up at 3am maybe I'm just delirious. He unlike me is once again fast asleep and I'm trying to figure what type of camo would be best for milking wild moose.

Now you got me thinking!

Was thinking about a new career in agriculture anyhow.

Nice thing about moose, they are so tall, easier to reach the udders...

It's been attempted. Moose don't do well in high density enclosures, they stress/fight too much. There's a reason those folks are making that kind of money, they are the only ones who have figured out how to do it.

Also, no. Game farming is a sure way to spread diseases to wild populations an should be outlawed.

Seeing that Alberta still allows keeping wild animals as pets (elk and deer farms), maybe elk cheese can offset the costs of CWD monitoring those farms have caused.

I think we have enough problems with elk farming so I would not want to add moose and creating another game farm problem.

Skunk cheese. Now that would be Alberta exotic. Maybe even beaver cheese.

For mountain lovers... how about Pika cheese?
