Default Man charged with killing BC police officer had an expired gun license

Perhaps the renewal process should be enhanced to help avoid unfortunate situations like this...

The renewal process had nothing to do with this incident. The moment he was given a mandatory psych hold he should have been at the very least flagged and the situation should have been investigated then. If he truly was a danger to himself or others then the firearms should have been confiscated then. Had he renewed after the hold then I would say the renewal process failed. I'm willing to bet he was flagged, police were notified and some police force dropped the ball by not going to collect the firearms. Now they are blaming the renewal process instead of their own incompetence.

Funny how the emphasis is on the expired PAL, not the failure of the our mental health system to recognize this man was starting to spiral and needed some major help. Even though he was in hospital 3 days.

First and foremost it’s crappy an officer didn’t go home after his shift.

Even if it was a family member involved my stance would not change on the object used. A sick mind.

The mental health system can't help people who don't want to be helped. Plus even the people who knew this guy the best did not realize how far he had spiraled, so how is the system suppose to know. Most people with mental health issues are really good at hiding how they are doing, from everyone.

We should make a law that would require people to declare their mental illness and check themselves into a metal health facility. That will save us from these incidents.

Would not have helped in this situation, as he was not admitting that anything was wrong. As there are thousands of people in Edmonton with mental health issues who are contributing members to society and will never pose a problem, not fair to lock up everyone with mental health issues because of a few. You wouldn't like to be locked up only because you are male, would you. Seeing as most of the people that commit crimes like this are male....maybe if we locked all males up we would be safer. LOL does't sound very fair does it?
