Genetics is my guess. Great deer either way. Age can be determined by teeth. That's above my pay grade

When both antlers are somewhat similarly nontypical I believe it is genetics, especially if the antler bases and pedicle are undamaged and normal. When one antler is a normal typical and the other is weirdly non typical starting right from the base of the antler such as the buck in the pictures I think it is caused by damage as the antlers antlers begin to grow from the pedicle and may repeat deformities every year if the actual pedical on the skull that the antler grows from suffered permant damage.

I hazard a guess of injury, some where near the base pedicel, or to the body on the right side. Dandy buck, congratulations!

I'm going with some type of injury to the base of the one antler in the early stage of growth.

I go with an injury to the base of the antler, probably a permanent one that would effect growth yearly.
Either way you have an Awesome buck there, congrats,

Cool looking buck.
Any comments on genetics or injury would be pure speculation.

I have one wth very similar characteristics, even the point coming out the back almost pinning the ear down a bit.It has basically a typical 5 pt. right hand side with a 3" drop off the main beam. The left however has an extra 4 point smaller beam just inside the larger main beam. There is also another weird large drop coming off the left base as well for a total of three coming off the left base. The left base has an 11" circumference.
There was no sign of injury to the antler or the rest of the deer.I feel it was genetics but we'll never know.

Nice character buck. It looks like the little NT point behind the ear could be an old injury only because of the colorization along the middle.
I think I shot his brother a couple years ago only I am a long way from Water Valley. The only difference is my buck also has a 9" drop tine on the other side. The skull on mine looked a little distorted at the antler base. The valley I shot it at is known to produce non typicals.

Very cools and oddly the same rack !
I kinda really hope this deer was non typical because of genetics cause typical he would have been a beast and I would have waited however been surrounded my crown land I know someone would when shot him on site he is still a big deer being 23-1/2" wide on the inside... so thanks all I really like him and it's my only true nontypical to date he will be going on the wall.
