Arrow Personal Rifle Preference - Features & Specs

Over time we come to love some specs about rifles.

Some things i've come to love:
7-7.5 lbs all up
40" or less Length
13 3/4" LOP
2.5-2.75 lb trigger pull
Bolt action
Detachable Magazine

Optional:
Stainless (preferred but not deal breaker)
Synthetic or Wood make me happy on the stock

What are some of your favorite features/specs?

Depending what I'm using the rifle for is what/how I set it up. Off the bench is much different compared to a hunting rifle.

If you mean hunting rifle, it needs to fit me, and I should be able to lift it, with my eyes closed, put my cheek on the stock and when I open my eyes, the scope picture is perfect. The safety should be easy to locate and actuate.

Usually look for a Light weight, a rifle that has variable optics I can turn way down to low power and keep there in case I have a target in need to quickly get on and stay on, etc...

I like stainless, composite stocks for hunting. A carbine is nice for the bush.

I like classic straight stock design, 13.5" LOP. Trigger crisp and no creep at 2lbs pull. Low mounted scope with 3.5-4" eye relief. Prefer light weight synthetic stocks, 22"-24" fluted barrel, and a removable magazine. Weight under 8.5lbs scoped with full magazine.

Short, light, standard calliber, low powered scope... most important is the last one. I can make any rifle work for me until someone puts too much glass on it. I'll take irons any day over a scope that wont do less than 4x.

I keep telling myself I have certain perimeters and requirements in a hunting rifle but in the end as long as it is accurate , Fits me, and is in a falling block action I'm probably going to be happy with it !

That being said I like s lot of bolt action hunting rifles as well

Default Rifle

I do not hunt but the 9mm can take any North American game...if you are good enough! To involve younger and the fairer sex in pure fun:

9mm
Compact
Synthetic
Optic optional but preferred

Different preference for every application. If I was after just one hunting rifle
CRF action
16-20" barrel
Open sights
Low- mid power scope 2-7, 1.5-5, 2-10 ECT
Sub 8lbs
Good trigger around 2#
12 3/4" length of pull
.308

But life's too short to only use one rifle setup lol. I like diversity

I have a 1990 Mountain rifle with an oiled stock, Timney trigger in .280 topped with a 2-8 scope my current favorite because it's the lightest one in my safe.

Very similar.

90's Rem 700 mountain in .280 Rem. Triggertech and Wildcat stock are the upgrades and with a 3-15x44mm scope. It is light and accurate, and has survived all the abuse I've thrown at it.

Bolt action - well machined and smooth; not choppy or chunky.
Wood or laminate stock (they just feel... right?)
Bedded

Default Ideal gun

3 position safety, large bolt knob that’s easy to grab with gloves on, accurate with beautiful wood stock so I can worry about marking it up all the time = Winchester super grade.

I know what I don't like. Too long overall length. I handled a CA long action Ridgeline, I couldn't believe how long it felt. I prefer to stick to 42" or less, and a good crisp trigger.

-Carbine length bolt action, at longest 40”, sub 38” even better.
-Short barrel, 20” max, 18” even better.
-I prefer 60 degree bolt throw, offers the ability to mount optics lower.
-I like back up iron sights, though they are difficult to come by on rifles I like.
-TANG SAFETY, love it, right where the thumb sits. Locking the bolt is a plus (3 position).
-Like one other commenter said, proper cheek weld height (shoulder rifle with eyes closed, open shooting eye, perfectly aligned cross hairs).
-Weight in the 7.5-8.5 pound range.
-My latest knit pick is front sling swivel to muzzle distance. I like my muzzle to hang low when I have the rifle slung.
-Detachable mag, must be flush mount for one hand carrying.
-ACCURATE. GOOD TRIGGER.
-Versatile chambering.
-Blued or stainless, doesn’t matter, gets wiped down with rem oil.
-Prefer the look of wood, often go with the toughness of synthetic.

Basically, Browning X bolt, but the forend of the stock could be longer and the front sling swivel could be closer to the muzzle.

Just my short list, hahahaha!

Different tools work better for different jobs
From rifle weight, to scopes mag, to caliber, to bullet selection, to barrel length etc
For standard set ups I like
Flush cups instead of swivels
Arca rails
Clean crisp triggers
Threaded for a brake
20 moa rails so I can easily switch scopes

A good trigger. Depends on action type what I expect but definitely something way lighter than 2 pounds like others have mentioned.
I want blued steel and real non laminated wood.
Rifle needs the right bloodlines.
The longer I pack a rifle around the more I tend to like it.

Ya Chuck, i'm probably just grazing the surface, but some of those broader stroke things i've certainly come to notice. I can forgive lots on the aesthetic fronts if the function is there. And sometimes i forgive some of the functionals if they are outweighed by some other key features, it really is hard to get it all. I'm probably more picky overall than my initial general preferences would suggest. Having said that, I don't think my attention to detail or ability to put form over function would work for you, you have a more demanding/impressive take on all things rifle.

Some good points in these preferences guys, made me realize i've missed mentioning several.

Currently playing with a 36" carbine that's 7 lb 2oz all up with sling (without ammo), just shot it's first paper last night at 200 in the wind. First two on paper after the look through the barrel bore sight, were almost in the same hole so that's a great start, of the four 3 shot groups i took specifically for group checking i was able to hold just over half moa for 2 of them and right at moa for 2 of them. Factory ammo. I'll be off on the weekend to see how it does at 500 and get my drop data for final set up. This little rig is short enough that those quick adjust two point slings work for it and have to say playing with one i really like it, pretty versatile. Sort of like a kifaru gun bearer for when you're not running a pack, you need to be quick you can be super quick yet remain hands free until that instant. This one a Ruger American Ranch in 6.5 Grendel shooting Hornady Black. Checks a ton of my boxes off. I'll Do a full review in another thread shortly.
