I like science lol....plus understanding the science usually means more fish in the boat.
On a lighter note...might be on the big lake tomorrow for some pre tournament scouting.

Dam wind blew me and my kayak off the lake today.

Out tomorrow for another go.

Hopefully French bay tomorrow if you’re out that way stop by and say hi!

Hopefully the wind is better for a small yak!

Well the lakers were on fire in spurts today.
Found bait and trolled through them picking up lots of smalls so headed for other bigger aggressive fish. I think today if your into jigging you could have had a super day but I was on a search for bigger fish so 8 hrs in the kayak and 18 km’s covered I caught a few around 28 inches but no real gooders.
Was calm, clear skies for the most part and sunny!
Sleep will come easy.

You don't want to be tip over in that cold water in a small boat this time of year , that cold water will kill you before you get out . Play it safe and take your big boat out . We don't want to hear from your wife you made your last trip on Cold lake .
We loss to many people in that lake every year .

Thx for the concern. Yes the water is cold, surface temp ranged from 5-12 C yesterday but below a foot or so your right ya better get back in the kayak quickly but calm.
Life jacket is on all the time, Cell phone, radio and practised getting in the yak if it tips with the old kayak so got a plan

. Plus I always let people know where I am going and it’s nice to have many people on the lake or can get out real quick should I need assistance.
These kayaks are extremely stable as you gotta work to get them to flip, most times you fall out and the kayak stays upright which makes me feel confident but not cocky....those days are long over

The other day I sat right on the side legs dangling in the water close to the shore just to cool off a bit.
Can hardly wait for another laker day

Decent day for us yesterday too....spurts is the right word. 4 or 5 in a row then a break then repeat. We checked out a few different areas we don't normally fish as well. Got a bit choppy on the east end from the river to the island around lunch time and the mayflies were brutal in the morning but otherwise a beauty day. Caught fish from 20-140 feet.....biggest was 78cm and lots of those 65-70cm fish.

Anyone know how the launch at the provincial park is? We are staying there in 10 days or so. I’ve never been to the lake so just want to make sure I can launch a 17ft aluminum.

While I'm not saying the Alberta regs will be different, the rule for this year is pretty clear- If you're fishing with an Alberta license, the 2023 regs apply.
Assuming anything else could result in a fine and loss of license for 1-2 years.

How’s the boat launch at Engish BayPP? I’m launching a 19ft boat. Last year the launch took some creativity? Also Sunday looks crappy so was wondering what the boat launch Marie Lake looks like in case cold lake is to rough. I’m assuming the boat launch is on the west side of hwy 897?

Water level has risen over the last week but English bay may be a bit shallow for your set up still.
Launch at the provincial park or marina if really concerned.
As for Marie lake I got buddies putting their boats in and heard no complaints.
Guess you gotta see the launches for yourself to see if they are doable for
Your rig.

Another great day on the kayaks hunting down lakers.
Calm waters to start the morning off but got rather nautical.
Put the miles on trolling and picking off lakers which got interesting during those wind gusts

Need a bigger kayak to store all the goodies!!!

Had to cover more area to find the bait balls with active lakers.
Many lakers in areas were not turned on so we made many moves to get on them.
Found one area in 130fow that had suspended bait and super aggressive lakers so we played around there until the wind went beserk.
Either way a great day to wet a line!

Looks like 34 inches was the longest and today the tourney is cancelled due to the high winds so basically it was a one day tourney.
Anglers atlas has the breakdown etc.

It was tough fishing yesterday.....we had very short very specific bite windows here and there but we were able to cash in. Wife and I both placed in the top 20. Only 2 or 3 fish caught over 80cm.

We've done 3 winter and 2 summer derbys and it's 3-2 for her already.....I needed a win lol.

I agree , as soon as a fish hits 65 cm its going to get taken,just like what happened a few years ago . I would rather see that lake full of 65 and bigger fish just so a guy can go to a lake and catch nothing but big fish all day .
That would really put Cold lake on the map .
Right now we don't need the smaller size fish 55-60.
In one year ,that lake will be fished out of lakers 65-70 .
All the bigger fish 70 and up will just get netted out .
