I'll be out. Heading out of the house now. We did some driving yesterday and saw them a little ways away but the land owner tells us that they're there. Fingers are crossed.

Went driving on my way home from work. Lots of cows around, shouldn't be hard to get a cow next week.

Is it hard to get permission in that small area?

good luck on your hunt. I always thought 212 was just a bow zone and maybe shotgun and ML similar to 248.

212, for the late season elk is primitive weapons. Archery, crossbow (anyone is legal), shotgun with slug (12g or bigger and I believe 1 1/4 slugs or heavier are recommended), and muzzle loader. Saw one guy yesterday with a crossbow, another with ML, and my partner and myself were there with our bows.

Hoping the cold/snow keeps them out in the fields later. I will be out Monday, Tuesday for a look.

DAMN! Now I'm really looking foreward to hear how you guys make out. I don't know about Calgary, but I just looked at the thermometer here in Edm. and it is -26. I can't imagine putting a couple hours in on a stalk to get in bow range and then actually draw back and release in this weather. I hope you guys are in a heated blind on a well used trail. Good luck.

Spot and stalk only. Never hunted from a blind.

You guys must have some good permission where you can really hunt these elk. All my success on this tag has been spot from the truck hop out cross the fence and plug one with the muzzleloader. Only once I was able to put a good stock on a heard on bull ranch. if you are hunting with a bow you will have a much better chance in regular season on the 212 cow tag. It's not easy now hunting when there is dozens of trucks driving around with guns shooting up the elk.

Only 175 tags for this and one guy said he filled his, so only like 170 trucks driving laps out there. Mines the old grey one lol

We had permission on some land last year during general season. Thanks to some other "hunters", half way through the season our permission was revoked. As we were driving by we saw a heard of about 150 head. Stopped in, got permission slip signed and off we went. We see them there quite often.
With the way the wind was and how we had to get there, they had vanished by the time we got to them. In the same spot last year I was 40 yards away from the same herd. I only had a cow tag then as well, in general season, but the fog was so thick I couldn't make out the heads so I didn't take a shot.

Yeah, those "hunters" will do that to you every time. Thankfully it didn't taint the land owner enough to keep you out for good. Pm me if you are willing to share any specifics on your "honey hole"

If I can figure out how to load pictures on this site then ill put a couple up! I was running the old shot gun with some winchester slugs. Honestly you don't need huge slugs but everyone has a personal favorite. I checked some ranches that I've bow hunted on or near before and was lucky to get some permission. The old slugger did the rest and with one shot she went less then 60 yards from the point of impact. It was a fun little hunt to end my season and being fortunate enough to connect is just the icing on the cake! Keep at it and you should connect with some decent permission and some hours in the cold. Good luck to everyone!

This link has some info. I would think that a 75 yard hot is a long shot. I think, but I do not know for sure, a rifled barrel or choke tube with the sabot slugs should be a bit better on accuracy over range.

That's the rifled slug rather than a sabot.
Still has lot's of energy out to 125 yards. I'd think you'd better be one heck of a shot though.

I've seen sabot slugs spin deer around at 100 yards. With the right barrel and slug combo it's not a problem. I'll look into some pics to post tonight for you.

I've shot lots of slugs out of smooth bores with open sights. Got a real nice WT in 2009 with a mossberg 590 special purpose with ghost ring sights. Shooting 1 oz rifled slugs. Didn't go down right away at a 100 yard shot. Shot him again and he went down. Both slugs went right through his ribs within inches of each other.
Slug guns are fun!

With a rifled barrel, some of the newer slug loads are adequate to 200 yds.
