Default Another one off the list, first Lake Trout, now Walleye

I finally caught a Walleye yesterday, at Cold Lake. I was surprised at the anatomical differences between them and pike; football shape, scales like sandpaper, the dorsal fin made of surgical syringes, and bone structure. I had a tough time getting the knife to cut behind the head, tried 4 razor sharp filet knives before one cut through, was just about to get out the chainsaw. Then I realized it was easier to insert the tip of the blade and cut from the inside out. Yes, it was late, I was tired, I get it

1 down, 10129 to go!

4 that were within an inch of legal. I will get one, but am still trying to get stuff straightened out. I used a willow leaf and anchovie on both lines, but only the bottom line got hits. I started at 45 feet with 10-15 feet behind, second line 10' higher. I went half an hour at a time, dropped 10' every half hour or so, and tried to match their depth on the fishfinder. I was in 90-125' and fish were showing right to the bottom.

When I found a bait ball I tried to circle it then cut through the middle until I got a hit. I did slow s's all day long, and varied speed. I was happy with 4 up, but sure wish Kyle would have caught one.

There's more summer....

Nice Walleye. That would be about five pounds would it not ?
At any rate, bigger then anything I have caught this year. So far the best I have caught this year was 20 inches and most were under 16 inches.

Yup, from the inside out, best way to do them, and cut down both sides of the palm shredder, then pull it out before it gets you. Don't forget the cheeks.
Some of the best meat on them, and no bones.

I am not going to post the weight because I am scared of being nukes, but it was closer to double than single digits by a long shot. The filets are 1.5" thick!

I may have to go get some more!

It would be cool going with people that know how to catch walleye, I am an avid listener.

Thanks guys!

Ken, when I plan a trip to Lloyd to pick up my .240 coming in at Clay's, I will drop you a PM. See if you want to duck out for a day of fishing. I know quite a few tried and true walleye tactics....and would be happy to split boat/truck costs with you. I just picked up a mean heavy baitfishing reel and rod and would love to try it out on walleye and lakers....

You bet, sounds great! The only thing really holding me back is bad weather, not interested in huge waves on Cold Lake. Kyle was very nervous yesterday, the rollers were 4-6' top to bottom and 10' across. Nasty stuff.

You're welcome to come fishing with me. Unfortunately the fishing around here stinks right now. With all the rain the rivers are running high and muddy.

But when the conditions are right the fishing can be great. 10 to 20 Walleye an hour is not hard to achieve and fish in the double digits are not uncommon. Plus there is always a chance at Pike up to 20+ pounds and Goldeye up to four.

I expect the techniques we use wouldn't work as well in your area. But I suppose they are worth a try.

Up here we get our best luck with Yellow or White twister tail jigs. My preference is for the double tail Yellow with Red twister tails. They look a bit like a tiger with red stripes.
In the rivers the Walleye like to work the slow current on the edge of faster currents. Places like river mouths and back eddies are prime fishing spots.

Use a slow to medium retrieve. Walleye like to pick up a bait as opposed to striking it like a Pike would. You will often feel a tap tap tap on your line as they take the bait and try to swim off with it. That is the time to set the hook. Don't expect them to grab the bait and run, they usually don't.
Try to strike on the second or third tap. If the tapping stops, continue the retrieve, only a bit slower. Or let it stop for a moment. Then resume the retrieve.

Walleye are primarily night feeders so early morning and right around sunset are your best times. They will bite mid day, but expect the majority of your bites to come right before sunrise or just after sunset.

Have a blast out there.

Great fish Ken! We just got back from Slave Lake, lots of fish but nowhere close to the size of yours, biggest was 53 cm but skinny. Enjoy eating, the best eating fish on earth! IMHO...

Wicked you got into the walleye Ken! One of the best eatin' fish in Alberta for sure!

thorne and I are tentatively headed up there in 2 weeks for the weekend...if you're interested in heading up at any point while we're there I'm sure we could arrange to hook up out on the lake or whatever

Default Awsome Wally

Way to go Ken. I would suggest an equal amount of margarine and butter in the pan, and a simple dusting of flour or breadcrumbs, or pancake batter to roll the pieces around in after you do a light egg/milk wash. I hope you kept the cheeks, as they are the best tasting part! You will soon find out why they are considered the best (arguably some like perch better) eating fresh water fish in western Canada!
