Default Well I never.......

Grew up as a farm boy, and spent lots of time in nature. Never seen one of these fellas before. Found him sound asleep this morning in my live trap. Was going to dispose of him till I looked at him closely. Thought it might be a flying squire but confirmed it through the internet.
Released him and he went straight up a tree about 60-70 ft. up and then glided at an angle about 70 feet across my backyard to another tree.
Wish I had him on video, It was one of life's wow moments. Seem them on nature shows and such, but never in the flesh. Cute little gaffer.

They are pretty cool. There’s an area by my cabin where I’ve seen a few of them.

Neat catch.

Put up a trail cam over a plate of nuts and you'll probably get lots of night shots of flying squirrels. They are totally nocturnal. They have the softest fur. Beautiful little creatures.

Those eyes, you sure can tell the thing is nocturnal by those. Looks half bat. Very cool.

The look on that deer's face is priceless. Got a laugh out of this. Mother nature has a sense of humour, that's for sure.

Think I will put up a trail cam and see how often they come in. I'm just south of Fish Creek so maybe might see more. My wife is unhappy that she didn't see it soar, but we never gave it any thought. In fact running on the ground he wasn't as nimble or fast as a regular squirrel. Was a neat moment.

I've seen a lot of them in weasel traps, a bit of a nuisance actually.
Only seen a couple of them live.

A lot of them out there but they prefer undisturbed old growth forests and established Spruce stands. Plus they are 110 percent nocturnal.

Harmless, cute, soft, a bit smelly and a nuisance to weasel trappers.
I'd rather have a hundred of them around then one Red Squirrel.

PS, interesting trivia about flying Squirrel.

When they glide from one tree to another , on landing they immediately dart around the tree to the opposite side just in case an Owl is closing in on them.

Saw one once about 45 years ago at my parent's cabin. The lake/cabin was about 130 km's north of Saskatoon in boreal forest. Never saw another one before or since.

Found one, half drowned, trapped in my recyclables barrel, a while back. I've seen them before, but not around here. Was a surprise.
