WC, as per your PM, we hunted different mountain ranges. Good luck finding him again!

Huge congrats to you, beauty ram. There's always something special about a sheep hunt and getting to fold a tag on your own sheep is hard to equal. Only a small percentage of sheep hunters get to do so in a year.

Hey dave I have a question. How was it getting your ram registered. Did you have to leave it and if so how many days was it left.

Don’t leave your ram! Your at their mercy then and they are always “busy”. Book an appointment and make sure there is an officer there to do it when you show up.

We called ahead to the nearest F&W office during business hours. They notified me that an appointment is now required (our group has registered sheep without appointments on several occasions in past years) to register.
The receptionist gave me the direct cell phone of the on-duty officer, and we arranged to have him measure and plug the ram that same evening. Could not believe the amazing service we received. He met us at 8pm and got it all done for us within a half hour.
As the new regs state, an appointment is now required. They may ask that you leave the ram, but I would suggest applying respectful pressure on the officer to register while you remain present.
Also, rams are now required to be caped before registering, rather than bringing in the entire head. This can put hunters in a tight spot, as a taxidermist will not touch or cape a ram that is not yet registered. This necessitates the hunter to cape the ram on their own, increasing potential for damage to the cape. In other words, watch a youtube video and practice on a deer first!

It says in the bulletin put out about the changes to registering sheep this year that a taxidermist can remove the cape but may want a BOL.

Do sheep shot through unregulated hunting also need to be registered/plugged?

Yes, all rams must be registered. Even those from FN harvest.

Dave, do you know if FN and Métis are required to adhere to the same age regulations? (4/5 curl, full curl) Also, are they allowed to hunt sheep in any zone any time of year?

The reason I ask is I heard a fella talking about fish and wildlife telling him he had to leave his ram with them and they would get to it and he didn't want to do that.

Sheep Dreams
Sorry guys, I do not want to turn this into a FN thread.
If you want additional info on FN harvest, contact F&W or our provincial biologists.
RZR: I also know of instances in which F&W asks a successful hunter to drop off the ram, to pick up at a later date. My preference would be to avoid this, but I believe that it is certainly possible that the officer ask them to do so. I would ask what the point of scheduling an appointment with them is, if they ask you to drop it off.

Thanks to Brian Dobson for his great work. Looking forward to having it up on the wall.
And a couple of Medicine Lake up-and-comers for good measure. I must admit that having park rams lick salt off your vehicle takes a little bit away from the sweat and tears of hard won effort needed to kill one in the wild.

Sheep Dreams
The ram is finally up on the wall, after having a friend pick it up and store it for a couple months. Glad to finally have it up.
Special thanks to Brian Dobson (Artistic Taxidermy) for bringing the life back into this sheep. One of my kids was even afraid to touch it thinking it was still alive!
