Who, exactly did you expect them to hire to put out the dumpster fire going on in Edmonton? I'm pretty sure the 2 key things with this hiring are that he has full autonomy over player personnel ( Lowe and MacT should update their resumes) and his job will be to mentor Gretzky until he is ready to take over the role on his own. Time will tell.......

Sounds like one of his first moves will be finding a coach.

"The Edmonton Oilers will replace Ken Hitchcock at head coach, TSN Hockey Insider Darren Dreger reported."

Strikingly similar resumes over the last ten years aren't they?

I honestly would like to see a younger management/coaching organization. When I say young I mean old enough to be wise and young enough to adapt to change. People in the mid forty’s would fit that bill.

Just watching the presser now for Holland, saying all the right things as expected. Will be interesting to see what he does, I guess coach first then the draft may show what he has in mind. The Fan 960 had a good conversation yesterday about it, if he rushes it could be bad and make things worse, or be open and say it's going to be a grind and take a few years, will McLovin be ok with that as long as steps forward are being made. Or will he not be happy with that? As a hockey fan it will be interesting to watch, what do Oilers fans want? Hurry hurry or do it right and take the time?

I know for me personally as an Oilers fan, they need to hurry and at the very least do a few things right. I'm ok with slow and easy, but some positives need to come soon, very soon, like now soon!

I get that a new GM wants his own guy. But With is a valuable asset. One that doesn't come along all the time. Perhaps he was hard on the guys and they core group didn't like his way of holding them accountable?

X2.
But if I were Holland and its rumored his salary comes with a bonus structure, I'd want my own coaches in place.

Hitch is a good coach , surprised he didn't get a one year contract. I said it when he got hired and was wondering how the young starts would take to his tough, hard old school approach. May have nothing to do with it but I would be hard pressed to think they will find a better guy.

I don't think it's about his style or how they players are reacting to it. I don't doubt he wasn't always beloved in that dressing room, but there's no denying he took a few of those players to new levels. Having said that, I'm not sure it's the best approach, and obviously neither was Holland.

Holland was pretty clear as to the main reason when he was asked about it. He's looking for a LONG term solution. Someone he can "come to work with" every day and be part of a team well into the future. Hitchcock is not that guy, even by his own admission. I'm not sure who the next guy will be, but I think there's some good candidates out there. My preference would be to go younger and more "new school" as a counter balance to Holland. Let them grow together. I guess we'll see.

I'm not upset that Hitch won't be back as the HC, I think that's absolutely the right move, you need to start fresh. He's under contract for 2 more years. If they're smart, they'll take advantage of that hockey knowledge and experience, and his passion for his hometown team, and they'll make him earn that money in some kind of advisory or mentorship role in the organization.

Holland must get rid of Mac T, Howson, and Dustin Schwartz!

Hitch can be useful in an advisory capacity to both the farm team and the Oilers.

X2 on that, and I wouldn't stop there. I'd be cleaning house in the pro scouting department - Sutter, Green, etc...

I'd be seriously evaluating the amateur scouting side too. There's a lot of room for improvement, and that's traditionally been one of Holland and co's main strengths.

I have softened my stance on Mac T a bit, I've read a lot of reports that say he's had a big role in the success and "culture" that they have going on in Bakersfield.

Ya never know if the top core of the players had any input if they wanted Hitch to stay. I would hope he stays in a management position.

On Holland for GM.

I don't think the list for available GM's was long, I will wait and see what he does in the next year before I jump on the what has he done lately band wagon. He has some super stars to work with, hopefully he can build a winning team again and get Mcdavid a cup or two. Wonder if he will clean house of the remaining old boys club.

BD. Sportsnet is reporting he is really sick. 50/50 chance of survival. Multiple surgeries on his face. It is some infection. Doesn't sound good.

Yes it sounds quite terrible for the guy. No wonder he's been out of sight for all. Feel for the fellow for sure.

Definitely sad to hear about the owner and his troubles. When I seen him I was taken back as it's been a while since I have seen hi. And that's not what I remember. Hope beats it and sees his team succeed, well succeed but not to much until the Flames do it first. Let's not lose our heads.

I doubt Kevin Lowe needs to update his resume as, if I am not mistaken, he works for OEG as a vice chair and alternate governor. He has not had any responsibilities as far as the team goes since Nicholson showed up.

Default Coach?

Who do you guys think Holland hires? He has already hinted he wants a younger coach who will around for awhile. I think that eliminates Ruff. I think Holland tries to get Dan Bylsma. He was brought into Detroit as an assistant coach by Holland. At least he has won a cup and managed a team of versatile personalities.
