Default White sheep

Steve let us know who you pick.

I am curious of the Alaska option. Is there a reason no one seems to go with them from here? I guess besides the keep the money in Canada comment.

ISB...You might want to look into the resident requirements and hunter host thing a bit more. Yukon you need to live there for a year before you are a resident and NWT you need to be there 3 yrs I believe.

Also you can only host once every 3 yrs and each non-resident can only be hosted every 3 yrs. There is also limited hunter host permits.

I have a buddy in Whitehorse and I am making sure when we get the permit everything is set to go that fall. The sad thing that like BC you can't be hosted for sheep as a hunter host you are limited to moose, caribou, black/grizzly bear.

Default Split the difference

How about we split the difference.

I looked it up afterwards.

Not sure if it's official yet until the new Act is in place but you are correct SH. Very slowly trying to catch up with the rest of the Canada. Only thing I'm not sure of yet is if they are going to right it off for RCMP and Military.

Correct me if I'm wrong but isn't it a once-in-a-lifetime kill not tag? ie you can hold as many tags as you want till you kill a bear.

Yes....you are correct. If you do not turn your tag back in by the mid of Nov 15th (I believe that is the date off the top of my head) they assume that you've killed it and you will not be issued one ever again.

Default almost made it

Was highly motivated in those days and about 11 caribou tags per year for residents. Once in lifetime grizz and free post secondary education for my kids. North of 60 bonuses etc etc etc had the job until the minister of finance said if you move to NWT it will be by yourself.

It's not a bad place.....there are some big city amenities in Yellowknife.

Timmies, Can Tire, Wally World, McDonalds etc.

20 000ppl

Lots of artistic weirdos....if you're into that kinda stuff

We used to get 5 tags for barrenground bou....none anymore
They rest of the hunting IMO is the best in Canada with the exception of the Yukon.....possibly BC but I really like the "otc" thing.....I don't think I'm smart enough to figure out the draws in AB.

Every 3yrs you go to school here you get a grant. Typically it'll cover your books and tuition and a few beers. Was about $3700/yr when I used it....early 90's. There is also "forgiveable loans" that you can access that get paid back by living here. $750 every 3mths if I recall correctly.

The tax right offs are good.....typically 9-12k on my returns pending how much I spend on holidays.

One of the best things about YK is the fact that recessions seem to miss us or have very little affect locally. Mines are working and we're Govt central so there is that bit of cash influence all the time.

There is always work if you want it. I'm 41 and been employed since I was 13.....and that was as a pool cashier for $13/hr.

We got lotsa girlz up here....but now they all know that a 1ct diamond is not that big a deal lol.......you would probably be better bring'n one with you!!

Long winters and bugs can be a bit of a detractor but it's what you make of it......same as anywhere.

There does seem to be more opprotunities up here compared to the South.....but I think it is just the fact that there is 5 pple applying for it instead of 500.

Default Was in Yellowknife

Greig? ran Bluefish and guided me for Barren Ground and we caught and released a lot of grayling. I was an accountant here at the time and he said that his 'real" job was for Territories in a position of "accountability" for all governemtn departments. Sounded like Internal audit. Perks for my kids getting a year University Education for every 3-4 of grade school they completed sound good, Hunting and fishing sounded incredible and i would have received nearly a $20,000. raise over what Feds were paying me at the time. This was in the late 80's and it sounds like the restrictions on hunting bou have kicked in since then.
Artistic weirdos? sounds like I would have fitted right in,check my carving website!
thanks

Ahhhh, Greg Robertson....Aurora Caribou Camps....great guy and great area.
Was Darcy Hernblad up there when you were there....nuther great dude from that camp.

They haven't had that audit done since forever I think.....many a heads would roll if they did. There is no accountability within the Govt.....25% carries the other 75%.

I'd be interested in your site. Don't know if you can post it on the public forum (I would lol) but if you think it's a rule breaker....could you please pm it to me??

Default long story

Darcy I believe was from Yellowknife and guided for Greig.
had bear problems at D'Stefanie lake so they called in a flip plane delivering gas north of us to pick us up. they weren''t sure the plane would take all 4 hunters, guides and animals out at once so looked for volunteers to wait until next day regularly scheduled flight. Darcy and I volunteered to stay but it turned out the plane took everyone out in one trip. Heard a few days later the Barren ground grizzlies we had seen and were concerned with (following us around on tundra) did come in and destroy the tent camp that night we would have stayed.

I've shared phone calls with over 12 Yukon/NWT outfitters so far. Have ruled a few out, but still not sure who I'd like to go with.

All backpack outfits are fairly comparable, coming in right around 20K.

I'm not looking to cheap out, but can't afford to do it twice for one ram either.

Anyone hunted with Dueling Stone? Sounds like a good outfit, but I am a little concerned that they are on the fringe of Dall country. Primarliy a Stone sheep outfit.

Anymore info is appreciated, thx for the PM's as well guys.

Funny that you should ask about Deuling Stone Outfitters as he just got a bit of a free plug today on Hockey Day in Canada courtesy of Ron Maclean.

I believe Jarrett was a pretty decent hockey player. I think Ron lived in Whitehorse for a period of time as well. He said he wish he could have had Jarrett on the show but he was down in the states selling his hunts.

Jarrett had a brief stint in the NHL. He runs and incredible outfit but only has a small area with Dall sheep. I think he only takes one or two a year.

Hey congrats, glad it all panned out for you. I hear you how it is both exciting yet scary at the same time. I was up there for the first hunt this past season and also managed to get into camp early - was nice to be able to soak in as much of the Yukon and the whole experience as possible.
