Hunting Vests?
How many people use a hunting vest? For waterfowl or for big game?
I am looking to buy one but I don't know what one.
Any Tips?
Thanks

I like to use a vest when I'm upland bird hunting, but that is about the only time. FS

I use a vest for upland, and often a lighter vest for waterfowl.
The big thing to look for in a upland vest is whether or not the pockets have ammo straps!
I bought one a few years back that is super EXCEPT that the ammo rides loosely in the pockets, and if you carry different types, that is not good.
The one I am using these days is a cabellas, and it is great except that it has no orange on it, which is what O prefer for upland hunting, there are times when across a hedge row, or in tall weeds that you cannot see your partner but for the flash of orange on his vest.
Make sure the game pocket can be access from the front as well as the back, and that it is waterproof, it makes it much easier when cleaning.
My son bought one of the vests with removable arms so you can make it into a jacket, but finds it is very heavy and hot even with the sleeves off.
The best vest I ever bought was about $35 from Sportsman's warehouse, it's a Gamehide, and I think Cabellas or WSS sells it as well.
Lots of ammo storage, front loading orange , and comfortable.
here it is .
The shells are also protected with a flap.
Here is the reason I like to wear orange!
This vest is great except for the lack of shell straps in the pocket

I agree that the cabellas vest is great. They do offer it in solid blaze orange. I have one and really like it. X2 on cat's comment re front access. That's the feature I like best, I think, now that I'm not quite as flexible as I once was. (I think that line in Toby Keith's song applies here - "I ain't as good as I once was but I'm as good once as I ever was").

Traps, I have an old Redhead camo vest that you can have if you want it. It ain't fancy and is not an expensive one but it'll do the trick if you aren't out to win the best dressed bird hunter award.
If you want it just pm me your mailing address.

I bought a primos bow hunting vest last year, and I found it really awesome to have all the extra pockets for calls and range finder etc. I used it while on stand and still hunting! I carry a small back pack most of the time too for water and to hold knives and gps and what not! But the vest makes it easier to carry the calls and stuff in the front which adds a ton of convenience for me! I wore it every time I went out this year!

I'll mail it out tomorrow Traps. Awhile back I asked about a coyote call and pitw sent me one that he wasn't using. A similar offer was made by Hal53 for a reloading press. This is my unofficial PIF and if the opportunity arises maybe you'll get the chance to PIF someone else.

Vests r cool
I always use a Vest.
It's a great way to carry specific stuff you might need(tags, shells, toilet paper, snacks, knife, calls,)without having to carry a fanny pack or back pack.
I use the Primos bowhunter vest.
For hunting everything from gophers to elk.
The front of the vest has a cool loop of heavy material to put your bottom cam of your bow in when waiting to draw on an animal.
When waiting a while for a good shot it's so nice to be able to rest your bow.
When calling Elk it works awesome.
Or up in my climbing tree stand for deer.

I use a vest for upland bird hunting but what I'd really like to find is a canvas jacket that is somehow cut in the armpit so that when you lift your arms to fire, you're not also lifting the weight of the shells, camera, water etc in your pockets.

Cut the seam under your arm. If you are worried about the cold on your armpits when your arms are raised measure the opening with your arms raised and get a piece of material the shape of an orange wedge sewn in. That ought to work! OR, get a zipper sewn in and you can unzip your armpit when you're hunting.

HEY! I'll have you know that in some circles I'm a pretty natty dresser!!
As far as the limit goes, even a greenhorn like me can find a limit of grouse every now and then!

DanJ,
If you want to avoid the weight of your vest and it's load on your shoulders you need to try a strap vest. The weight is carried on your hips and it sure helps reduce fatigue if you do a lot of walking. If you decide to try one, Wingworks is the way to go. They are built very well and carry a big load. The service is good as well.

I have three or four different upland vests. Some are heavier than other for different times of year when it is warmer or colder. My favorite is the Filson. I have had it for years and the quality is second to none IMO. Cheers SM
