How to re-Finish a laminate stock

Good evening all,
I have a question for those of you that are handy and have experience in making repairs to stocks.
I have a Ruger M77 Black Laminate stock. At the beginning of the season I managed to damage my stock. I have several good gouge marks as well as rubbing off a lot of the finish.
Is there a way to sand the affected area and re finish it? If so what would be the process as well as the products that you would use.
