I have used the 8X76MS which is a tad slower than the 8X57.
the 8X57 is a great cartridge and powerful enough for anything in North America that anybody would get after with an '06.
The 8mm bullets tend to handle the bigger grained bullets very well....

my 1942 german issue will print under an inch consistantly with federal 170 grainers. Thats with a timney trigger and a glass bedded free floated laminate stock. I'd like to do a bit more reloading for it.

If you do more reloading, try the Hornady 195 grain bullet, the 8x57 has the right twist and handles the heavy bullets better than the lighter bullets.. As Cat said, anything that can be taken with the 06 can be done with the 8x57.
I shot some 200 grain Sierra bullets, my Brno 8x57 likes any bullet above 170 grain. The 200 grain Nosler Partition will be a good moose killler and was very accurate in all the 8mm Mauser rifles I have owned.

I have purchased several rifles and a couple pistols from them. Always arrived well packaged, and fast. Last rifle I got from them was a 6.5 Swede Mauser M96. Was exactly as posted on their site, and was a good price for what I got.

The 8mm Mauser is a ballistic twin for the .338 Federal(almost), except for the fact that the .338 bullets do not have quite as a good a sectional density for the same weight as the 8mm bullets. It is a good deer cartridge, and can do whatever a 30/06, 308, 303, or 7mm mag can do. If you handload, you can get good long range performance to pretty well match the 7mm mag with 150 grain bullets, and leave a little bit bigger hole when it hits. If you use Barnes TSX bullets in 180 grain, you can get about 2650 FPS with a slightly less than max load, and a BC of about .390.
