Default Inreach vs mini inreach

Looking at picking up either the garmin inreach with the gps or the mini inreach. Was told that there is no way to download tracks, weighpoints etc off of the big inreach onto a program such as basemap so that I can transfer to another device or look at on google earth after. Not sure if that is true or not, but that's what I was told. Are people running the regular garmin inreach or the mini more?

What are you intending to use it for? Neither is a great GPS, but both (especially the mini) ARE an excellent emergency communication device ( especially when paired with a smart phone).

Know the advantages and the disadvantages and go from there.

I bought the inReach mini because it is the smallest/lightest standalone comm/GPS package out there. If I need more functionality I can bring the phone and/or GPS mapping device. If I had just the inReach with maps I can't shave any of it off to make it lighter.

They had until recently the inReach Explorer, which was a full function garmin unit with the sat com capabilities. Now it's been replaced by the GPSMap 66i, which follows the Garmin naming system. It seems to to be an upgrade, but it's $800 or so.

Either have a lot of mapping functionality through the phone app if that's what you need, but the bigger unit has the battery-sucking screen right on the device. So it all sorta depends on what you need.

No intention to derail, but if we are talking about satellite to phone units, there is other options to Garmin, here is what I found.

https://www.bivystick.com, came out in 2018 and uses the iridium service

https://www.somewearlabs.com, uses the iridium system also
