I bought the inReach mini because it is the smallest/lightest standalone comm/GPS package out there. If I need more functionality I can bring the phone and/or GPS mapping device. If I had just the inReach with maps I can't shave any of it off to make it lighter.
They had until recently the
inReach Explorer, which was a full function garmin unit with the sat com capabilities. Now it's been replaced by the
GPSMap 66i, which follows the Garmin naming system. It seems to to be an upgrade, but it's $800 or so.
Either have a lot of mapping functionality through the phone app if that's what you need, but the bigger unit has the battery-sucking screen right on the device. So it all sorta depends on what you need.
