Default Is 24" barrel needed for a 25-06?

My kid is looking to buy his next rifle, he has his mind set on a tikka t3 lite in 25-06, it is a 22" barrel, I haven't ever owned a 25-06 or a tikka t3

I have read the a 24" barrel is a need for a 25-06, is this truly the case? He won't be shooting past 300 yards.

Thanks.

The difference in velocity isn't going to make that much of a difference, especially if he's not planning on shooting past 300 yards.

I had a sako finnlight in 25-06. Shot exceptionally well. Shot it over a chrony and every load was 300-400fps slower than published data. Same with factory. It was just a loud 257rob if that. Looked into it after and found out that the 25-06 is a different animal that requires 24" and 26" is often recommended.

My go to rifle is a 25-06 with 22 inch barrel.

I had a Tikka T3 Lam/SS that would routinely do 3300 fps with a 100gr bullet and 53gr IMR4350. A 24" barrel is preferable, but not essential.

Hey Jordan how is going in your world?

north American hnter,
barel length, I had a 257wby deluxe in a 24" and an ultralite accumark with a 26"bbl. the velocity was 100 fps difference with the same round.. ergo 50 feet per second per inch.
not sure if its proportional across the cartridge range or if a 28" would develop an extra 100fps.
the 2506 is a great caliber choice for north American plains game by north American hunters

Personally I don't like the sharp crack short barrelled high powder charges make.

i Have a finnlight in 2506, i personal think it would have been better with a little longer barrel, your sure notice the flash when shooting at dusk, and its bloody noisier than my .270 with 24" barrel.
Wont make a blind bit of difference, at normal hunting ranges.

I have 26 inch barrel and wouldn't trade it. As said earlier 22 inch barrel is a 257 roberts but louder and more expensive.

Okay, so the kid backed away from the tikka 25-06 because of the 22" barrel, does anyone one of a maker that makes a 25-06 with detachable magazine and 24" barrel?

Other than remington.

I would of told my son "It's not the length of your barrel that's important, its how you use it".

If he's not shooting past 300 yards the 7 mm-08 in the tikka t3 is about as good as it gets. Low recoil, muzzle blast, report, detach mag, light weight. 308 would be another great pick.

2" of barrel is not going to make a lick of difference unless the shooter thinks it will!
22" is fine

I agree, I bought a Finnlight and it has the 22"+ barrel. Not worried about that

Exactly! Buy the gun and head out to the range, LEAVE the chrono at home and sight in the rifle. Nobody will notice a difference.
