Default 50 inch pike on the fly

Caught this guy on a big streamer last Wednesday up at Frontier Fishing Lodge on Great Slave Lake. Had a crazy day with over 50 fish landed and probably 20 fish that were 3 feet or bigger!

Perhaps this may explain why pike are sometimes called gators...

Great fish, AND for once a believable measurement ! Sounds like there has been some behemoths pulled out of greater slave this season, really want to head up there now!!

Thanks man! I was using a 9 weight Redington Predator along with the Rio Pike line, very nice powerful rod to cast. Never been spooled, never even had a pike take me to my backing - they're very powerful fish but they don't take long runs like other species. The few fish that did run more the guide chased to avoid getting tangled in logs.

PS I don't mind being called psycho, but I would prefer a more specific term for my condition - pike addict

How do you like that Predator rod? I almost bought one this year and decided not to.....

The only pike that took me to my backing was an 18lber from Badger.....

I really like it. It's quite a fast rod with a lot of power and no finesse. It doesn't have a lot of feel, so timing is really important on your casting. That being said, once you get the rhythm figured out it casts really nice - 7 inch streamers were flying out like nothing.

Nice, I always wondered about the shorter length @ 8'3" and how it would feel to cast....all my rods are 2 piece too so I wasn't sure about a 4 piece. Are you using Rio Gold with it? or Rio Pike? Rio Clouser? Just curious cause next year if might be on my wish list.

I broke the 40 club this year I am looking to upgarde to the 50 club!

Well the shorter length is really nice because it lowers the swing weight, so you can cast larger flies without the fatigue associated with a longer heavy rod. 4 piece is no problem either, nice and packable and no difference in the action. I use the Rio Pike, it has an aggresive taper made for casting large wind-resistant flies, very nice taper to it. I'd highly recommend the combo!

Nice, I hope you join it! Let me warn you though - if you think a 40 incher gives you pike fever, it only gets worse as you get more and bigger fish.

Yah big pike on the fly are like fisherman crack.....can't get enough! The one I caught this spring was C&R, 44 inches....estimate 22-25lbs had no scale.... but it was a rush.
