Default Let’s talk Packs

With an upcoming season going to be spent in the mountains and camp to be put in it’s got me thinking gear again!

What everyone recommend for packs, yes I know stone glacier, kafariu, or mystery ranch packs would be mint, also keeping my man hood in tact when trying to purchase a new pack with the wife around as well, looking for recommendations on new or used packs let’s say south of $400.00!

Not a bad deal on mystery ranch.

This would get you out there. MEC has great return policy if you don't like it.

Something used around 100L would be good too.

Absolutely DO NOT buy ANYTHING from MEC, regardless of their return policy as they publicly support groups who are anti hunting and anti oil/gas/industry.

That mystery ranch linked above is a decent pack.

Another good site for used gear is an American forum called rokslide. its a back pack/mountain/western hunting site with lots of good stuff on it.

Also, while something like an arcteryx is good for backpacking, keep in mind they are not designed for hunting. What that means is that they are not designed to carry a heavy load of meat, antlers, etc.

I’d really look for something used designed specifically for hauling meat.

You might could go this route with a dry bag until funds can be raised to add a bag. These are CAD prices.

I packed out my first two rams with a badlands pack. It was $250 new and it did the job just fine. I handed that pack down to my son and I bought a sitka.

There are a bunch of really great hunting packs available now. Mystery Ranch, Exo, seek outside, Stone Glacier, Rockman etc. However, their biggest downside is expense. Especially with the crappy dollar. Look for used. They do show themselves every once in a while.

Kijiji and patience.

I just picked up a Kuiu Ultra with two bags for $250. Also have an Eberlestock Mainframe I picked up for $125 (modified the load lifters).

Mystery Ranch pops up from time to time, but I have yet to find deals on one big enough for multiday. If I ever see a Metcalf pop up for cheap or a Stone Glacier I will jump on them and sell the others.

Definitely search the forums of the outdoor/gun sites. Deals to be had for sure.

Honestly, if you don't care about getting a camo print on your pack just go out and buy an Osprey pack. They're great packs, come in so many sizes and options, and have a lifetime warranty I believe.

I've used one since 2013 with no issues. Its packed an elk out and still good as new.
