Default Pigeon perch

Casting off the dock at Grandview last night had a nice school of 2-3 inch perch following my jig in. Could see the bars running across the backs. Was nice to see as it was the first time I’ve seen any type of perch in pigeon. Anyone else seeing them in the last year or two?

First ones I've heard of in probably over 10 years.

I firmly believe the perch have always been there. Somehow people think they all of a sudden disappeared. The shallows this time of the year is great for wading and spot and stalk casting if you can locate the perch. I'd bet there are a few bigger perch to be found too. 1 to 6 feet of water. Wear waders to avoid hives or duck mite bites.

When pigeon is really windy I have gone to the windy side of the lake and closer to shore as the big waves come in you can see into the waves and the big perch are holding, waiting for things to come in with the waves. Surprised me how big some were.

I've seen lots of the same size you mention when sight fishing for whites in the winter. Maybe the biggest I've seen is 6 inches.

The big perch are there. Used to fish for them quite a bit, but found a lake closer to home. No, it’s not the 80’s and you can’t catch buckets full of humpbacks, but hopefully most people are practicing sustainable harvest regardless...

This past week I actually found several perch at Wabamun following my rattlin’ rap back to the boat. Now that was a nice surprise.
