Changes to Elk Rifle season west of RMH
The change to Bow only until Nov 1 will be huge on so many Elk hunters, many of whom are probably unaware of the shutdown of the rut hunt.
These zones have been tough to harvest from since I started hunting them almost 40 years ago.
I very much dought the shortened season will increase the overall population.
It will however put even more pressure on surrounding units and reduce the number of wolves killed in the closed areas.
It seems each year we are loosing more general hunting opportunities.

Yep, and was mentioned in another thread about the changes, it's up to the hunter to know the changes.
Be a shame to arrow a bull, have it seized, be fined and lose hunting privileges....
But again, it's up to yourself to be in the know.

Yes and alot of zones went draw for rifle now. And some are draw for bow. Sucks as i had planned my sheep trip later in the year so we can hunt elk as well. Now no dice. Kicking myself for never entering the bull elk draw to build priority as i never wanted to hunt bull elk in the draw zones. Only ever built cow priority.

This exactly!!^^
I always buy General elk as I’m likely to hunt as many as 4-5 different WMUs over the course of the season, have never bothered with building priority.

Follow this link/Hunting draws sticky at top of Hunting forum...
http://albertaregulations.ca/
Open 2019 Draws booklet and look under “important changes”,it describes the changes to elk/which units are affected.

The draw books are out before the regs are and the changes to season dates are contained there.

I'd bet some of these closures and season changes are more about managing people than animals.
