Last year my fiancé started hunting with me. I got an amazing buck. She didn’t fare so well, lots of small bucks but just too small (1 yr old bucks) and the only time there was a shooter it was over 500 yards away. So no dice.
We can’t hunt much post mid November due to work as peak season begins, so it limits our chances come glorious November.
This year was more of the same so far. We planned on taking the first week of November off to take advantage of the open. A nice 5x5 has been hanging out in an area we have permission. Then she got a promotion and the time off couldn’t be accommodated.
Knowing that nov is pretty much off the table for her we have been hunting in an open zone, but lots of young bucks. So this weekend we were back at it. Sunday night we saw some 2 yr old 4 pointers but they were too far. Come back Monday morning and we are in position as the sun is coming up. Lots of deer, 3 1 yr olds in the crowd and a small 4 point. She wants a 4 point but this one is “barely” a 4 point. So we pass. The days activity has lots of does feeding, and a couple of 1 yr olds. Then the snow comes in the evening. It’s heavy and we can’t see 100 yards in front of us. Then it starts to ease. We can see more deer have entered the area. Now we see that second buck from the night before, and he’s good enough!
He’s 260 yards. Easy shot for her we have practiced up to 400 all summer and she’s an awesome shot. Problem now is we need a shot. He’s either facing away, or towards, or other deer are in the way. 35 mins go by what seems like seconds. Then I get a little to careless and a doe notices me. Shes not alarmed but she’s watching me. The buck has meandered to 300 yards now. I have the binos up so I can’t move or else that’s game over. Fortunately, the other deer look to see what she’s looking at but resume feeding so it’s only her watching. After 5 mins the opportunity presents itself and she takes the shot. Heart shot. She sealed her first buck!
She had a few more days to hunt but didn’t want to miss out! Super thrilled with him and that’s all I could have ever hoped for. Very proud of her shooting and a wonderful memory.
