Default Scope ring height

Good day, I am mounting a Leupold FX3 6x42 scope and I barely have room between the bell and the barrel. Not touching, but I can wiggle a neoprene scope cover under it. The rings and bases are the older weavers.I checked on Leupolds web site and they show with that scope I should be using Medium height rings. The ones I have are low rings.
How low is too low? my check weld is ok with the lows.
If I go with the Mediums that Leupold recommend, are the Leupold a good choice or is there something else that you would recommend .
Thanks .

I’ve found mounting as low as you can go is best, unless you’ve got some sort of weird shooting style.

By the sounds of it you’re pretty much perfect as is.

As a note not every manufactures “low” or “medium” are the same height.

Leave it as as. Leupolds recommendation will be conservative based on their inability to tell where that scope will be mounted fore and aft.

If you have clearance, and it's comfortable to shoulder, and look through, it is fine.

Sounds like you have some clearance, if you can shoulder it without hunting, moving your head around, for a clear, full image with no tunnelling, you are good to go. Just had two guns I put cheek risers on as I couldn't get them down any lower, with what I needed to use for rings to accomplish the intended purpose.

X2 on this, if its not touching I'd leave it. IIRC, the "low" Weavers are about as low as you can get.

“Low” from any manufacture is tight on whether it will fit any particular gun with a 40mm or larger objective, so leupold is obligated to recommend medium.

“Too low” is touching or unable to use a scope cover. Some actions like to eject straight up and jam/bounce empties off the windage dial.

As low as possible is the usual answer - but you’d have to be very borderline with your form to notice a difference. The average 5’8-6’0 male, shooting from field positions, can use low or medium without issue. If you do notice a difference, you can simply add a cheek piece to the stock.
