Default Whitefish - ripe for the pickin'

It's that time of year; water temps are rising and so are the whitfish.
The pelicans seem happy.

A couple of good ones.

I have seen MASSIVE die offs at Pigeon, Lac La Nonne, Gull, etc. These whites were in an area of shallow water when the algae bloom consumed the oxygen levels to a point that the fish could not escape to deeper water.

Some years back at Ma Me O Beach, the County cleaned the beach of all the dead fish that had washed up. My recollection was that 9 dump trucks of dead, rotting, stinking fish were picked up by the crews. Then the wind picked up and blew in even more.

Two locations.
Irrigation reservoirs SE of Calgary, McGregor and Crawling Valley. Happens every year. Being irrigation reservoirs, the water quality is pretty decent, but the surface temps were getting close to 75 F.

For people who prefer more of a classic AO answer.......

We saw a few floating at Calling Lake and went up to them and they were barely alive. When you get close they tried to swim under but just pop back up and yes the Pelicans were there in huge numbers. Water temp was 72.

Crawling was 76 F in the Marina and 74 - 75 F in the main body of the Reservoir about 10 days ago. Since that time it has been very warm, so I suspect the water is even warmer. The disappointment thing was a few folks were pulling Wally and Piker from 35 ft. on bouncers and thinking that C&R was great, and they could keep doing that. I wonder what the mortality is? Anybody have an idea?

From 35ft it would be high. I am always surprised at how little people care beyond their small window of the world. Sad really.

We fished Crawling Valley today, sad scene to see that many dead good-sized whitefish. All over out on the water, many washed up on shore bloated & stinky. Did not see any dead pike or walleye though so that's good news.

Nature can be a cruel old gal. Be interesting to see if this hurts catch rates going forward.
