Was out Monday. Got the one ruffie that I saw in 512 and one of the two spruce grouse. Out again Tuesday, saw two spruce grouse, same zone.

Got one west of Calgary a couple of weeks ago. Up to 339 twice last week. Nothing. I think it is a combination of a very wet spring and the normal downturn phase of the cycle. Oh well, the walks were nice.

Default Western WMU 339 low so far

I’ve spent a few good day west of Lodgepole and saw 1 spruce, no ruffies yet. This is incredibly unusual, and I haven’t seen it this bad in all of the years I’ve going there.

Had a spot where I usually see tons of grouse every year and didn't see more than a few this year so far

Was out today with my lab. Combo of walking trails and cut block edges -- the usual haunts and a couple new spots.

I'd say numbers are still less than the previous few years, but not like some are experiencing. Saw 8 ruffies, got 5.

Hit a couple of reliable Ruffie spots in 406 today, on green south-facing slopes. One of the dogs flushed one and I saw a set of fairly melted tracks. Most years I can limit in there at this time of year. Today I came home empty-handed. It doesn't look good.

The Blackfoot is pretty bare this year. Pulled a few out but nothing like previous years.

Noticed the same thing at my spots in 406, usually same kind of terrain you described as well, pointer got me one and saw some sign of another... used to get a limit or close to it every time in early October... a little worrying

Too much hunting pressure and extended seasons...think they've turned nocturnal like everything else

The broods were small this year likley due to the cold wet weather.
Not seeing many in my travels recently.

Edson area, about as wet as it gets. One trip so far, we saw 19 ruffies.

Has anyone else noticed a lack of young grouse in the bush?

Drewski[/QUOTE]

Usual spots W and NW of Calgary, very very low numbers. One bagged ruffled, seen 2 or 3 spruce grouse. All 3 of the latter spooked unusually early... they're wary of humans, that's for sure.

Saw 3 ruffled grouse on the road to Moraine Lake this weekend, though. Park numbers appear ok! Lol

I can confirm a lack of grouse in the Drayton Valley/Lodgepole/Cynthia area. Been out a few times to areas that held decent numbers last season and have not seen a grouse this year.

Have been doing all right this year, actually better than previous years.

Mind you, it's the kids who have been shooting them all. I'm just along as bear bait.

Back from a week in Slave Lake area.

Cold REALLY brought out the Grouse numbers.

There are LOTS of Grouse up there it turns out.

Story of the wet chicks dying this spring did not hold water.

Sorry Scott! (Now get out and get some birds!)

Been out in 412 a couple times. Only managed to see and bag one ruffie. I'm new to hunting grouse so your milage may vary.

Been to 526, 520, 359 and 350 this year. Ruffies are down, spruce and sharpies are up. Still decent numbers for my money. But predation is the determining factor. Lots of dog and cat sign and sightings in the places where the birds aren't.

Went out to 337 yesterday, seen 11 took 2. Most of them spooked before you could shoulder the .22. We were hiking the trails. Had the kids with us, they probably spooked most of the grouse.

Was in 339 today saw 12 between the 3 of us and took 6. 3 ruffles and 3 spruce. I haven’t seen spruce grouse in a few years before today

Default Blackfoot

Went hiking in Blackfoot with the family yesterday, spooked 5 grouse within a couple hours while sticking to the main trails. Seemed more active than I've seen in previous years.

Until snow hits the ground they have no reason to come out into the open. Every thing they need is available in the Bush still

Yes I would have to say the numbers are down but not too bad.
Just came from a week in 360, we got 6 and saw 6 more.
Last year was 2-3x as many.
