Petrified Wood
Took the elders and my Bro In law out for some Whitefish action on Sat to a place I have been going to for aprox 40 yrs. Since I was 12.
I have walked over this rocky shoreline for all those years and this time, the river gave up something cool. Just sitting there, the top out of the sand. With a bit of digging, moving rocks and prying, out popped a nice find.
I am happy with the way it washed up but is there something to do to make it pop? A friend used to tumble rocks and it was amazing to see the end result but this is too big.
Thoughts on what can be done or just leave it as is?

Cool find!
I would leave it as is; I definitely wouldn't tumble it.
You could use some Vim and give it a good scrub to get some of the film off, that may be enough.

Nice find!
Leaving it as is, a good option.
If you decide in the direction of the polished wet look, or "Pop!"...
Give it a quick soak in CLR or such (dilute muriatic acid) to remove any calcium carbonate scaling.
Please do NOT varnish it or spray with poly.
Nothing worse than a beautiful rock coated in plastic.
After it's clean, wax it.
Get some white beeswax.
Warm the rock up in the oven.
With a heatgun, melt the wax into the rock.
After the rock cools, Buff the surface wax off....
If you ever wanted to clean the wax off, soak in acetone or mineral spirits....

2 days ago I rubbed I little bit of cooking oil on a piece I have here. It helped pop out the grain but I think I might try a coat of Danish oil and see what that does to it.

What would really make the grain "pop", would be to have it professionally cut it in half & then polish the newly exposed grain.

Maybe check the law about collecting fossils I found out zero digging allowed as well as no polishing etc

I thought petrified wood was the exception. I find lots while running my sluice on the north saskie. I just checked my mining license and it says nothing about petrified wood.

To alter/sell petrified wood (or any fossil) you need a disposition license. Easy to get for petrified wood, impossible for any dino fossils.

I don't want to cut it up, it is cool as is. Thought about running the polisher over it with some grit to enhance the grain maybe, then wax it. I did years of polishing in my body man days, should be easy enough on a piece of rock lol. Maybe I should clean it and clear it 
At least 90% was sticking out, a couple smaller rocks moved and popped it out with the blade of an axe. If that broke a rule on keeping stuff I am not supposed too, opps. They can track me down easy enough I guess

It would have eroded out and fallen in the river. Just a matter of timing. Not sure if our petrified wood can be polished, most of what I've seen is poor quality, more like coal. worked on a project in downtown Drumheller once, where we found a petrified stump, excavating a foundation. It crumbled away.

I'm pretty sure the swat team isn't about to breach your door, throw in a flash bang as they simultaneous break through your windows rappelling down from a helicopter.
Trudeau, on the other hand, who stole from us to enrich his family, deserves this treatment.
You got some petrified wood. Polish it up and enjoy it.

I have a big chunk.....had to wrap a sling around it & loaded it into my truck with an excavator ! 
Backed up to my deck & rolled it off onto it.
Wife liked it.....but not for long. Told her to go ahead & move it
Years later I did, into storage. It didn't like being out in the weather.
