Default First of the year on the dry fly

Hey guys! Managed my first trout of the year on the dry fly this past Monday. Wandering down a Clearwater tributary, noticed some little, white mayflies (PMD?) fluttering about. Came around a corner to discover a big brown rising from a deep, clear pool. Probably watched him for a half hour before I cast. He didn't go for the first fly, and when he hit my second fly the nerves got me and I set a bit aggressively, pulled it right from him. Damn, missed my chance.

Sat back in the sun, tied a new fly on, relaxed for another half hour or so and he came back. Got my second chance, fooled him, and after a good fight ended up with my first of the season and first brown of my life.

He was all of 20". Couldn't imagine a better first of the season. Never forget it.

I'll follow up with a picture if I can figure out how to post one.

Smile You have the right idea!

If you are watching a big fish rising, do what you were doing and then float a big elk hair grasshopper over him. As you have seen he may watch a few at first but be patient (I see that you are) when he hits it, you will find it very exciting!!

Congrats!
And well impressed by your calm and patience, it's really hard not to get too excited and be too hasty when you see a nice fish rising.
That memory will sure stay with you.
