Default Bills next month

Anyone else starting to wonder how much are bills are going to be next month? Is once the carbon tax hits?

After this cold snap I am starting to worry about how much they will be in January

I called enmax to renegotiate my utilities yesterday and she told me gas was going up a dollar a GJ and she didn't know how much power was going up. Either way, she gave me free power and gas for January to match the deal atco is offering, 4.4 cent per kw/h for power and I left my gas price alone.
An extra buck a GJ for gas will cost me an extra $10-15 a month through the winter. The power is an unknown but either way it won't break me, it'll only irritate me a little more then usual.

I'm stuck with whatever it is going to be. Running a 40 yr old furnace that I had hoped to replace this year but life and lack of extra $$$ got in the way. Hoping the utility cost hit is not too big. I'm not a fan of the contracts for gas and power(yet). Come late spring the furnace gets turned off for the summer to fall and only the pilot light runs unless we get some cool wet weather, then we turn it back on as needed. Got good windows and insulation in the 40 yr old bungalow.

Not looking forward to all the other increases for goods that all come by truck. Food and such.

This carbon tax will be another hit to the family nest egg that we have no choice but to absorb

my guess if things go Ontario's way, things will be the same, good thing they can't shut off utilities during cold months

it's the devil you know versus the one you don't

I guess I will turn down the furnace and crank up the woodstove. Good old renewable woodpile technology. I will probably end up kicking out more CO2 as a result.

Probably won't notice the difference from December.

Property taxes are going up, town utilities are going up, insurance is going up, and in addition, the province decided to implement the Carbon Tax.

A friend just said he might have to sell his house and downsize as everything seems to be going up and his company just announced mandatory Fridays off and wage cuts.

It's going to be the same as gas for your car.
Gas goes up .10 cents a litre, we all complain...but we still drive.
It's not like your power bill is going to increase by $10 a month and people are going to stop cooking or turning on the lights.

I every body in Alberta fired up a wood stove/firepit, anything that can keep a fire safe while burning, start on Jan 1st and keep them burning until May, then the current government might rethink the tax, if reports come in with increased smoke around the whole province.

I know ill do it to keep costs down for US, we have a in house wood burner, nice comfort with wood heat, dogs like to curl up be the stove, we have a mesh screen we put to keep the dogs from getting to close

No idea. I'm for sure not getting A/C installed this summer though

It's not going to go up $10. I bet closer to $100 per month

My sentiments exactly and I will spend most of my spare time stockpiling wood for the next couple of years. Rule of thumb is to always be a year or two ahead with wood to burn as the unforeseen can lay you up at times.

Condo fees will go up, Power is going up, max tax rate is 42% in Alberta, you still pay more when gas goes up. Your give a fig may be zero now but you will eventually learn that we are all being quickly taxed into the poor house. The Governments are finding more and newer taxes, and making more and more bad decisions that will eventually kill the Canadian economy.

Some Ontario households are paying over $1600 a month just for power. Once coal generation is wiped out here in Alberta you can look forward to similar bills. Tell me that wouldn't have a negative effect on your monthly spending.

Default I have regulated service with Enmax and Direct Energy

Direct Energy Regulated Service refuses to match the ATCO offer. I may make the switch. Latest bill for regulated nat gas with Direct Energy was $142.81.

Latest bill for regulated electricity with Enmax was $41.27.

We have a new home/water heater/furnace/gas range...

It is estimated that the average household, with two children will be paying about $350 in extra taxes per year.
If said household's income is less than $101,500.00 they will be eligible for upto $360 in rebates.
The claim is that in most cases it will be a wash.
So let's wait till it actually comes into effect before we claim doom and gloom.

January could be a very chilly month, in more than one way.

Who's estimate? There are a bunch of them and that is the lowest one I have heard of. I'd like to see the economic impact study, oops there isn't one.

I do agree we will have to wait and see how much businesses pass onto the customers.

Can you please stop muddying the waters with all these facts. Its not helpful when we are trying to scare people. 6/10 people are going to get a check in the mail first week of January to offset the increase based on 100 GJ of gas per year and 4500 litres of gasoline per year.

The sad and disturbing thing is half the tax revenue will go to paying the government staff and associated costs surrounding the darn rebate.

When's the next election?

I have an outdoor coal boiler. Don't have a gas line to my property.
I pay $47 per ton for coal right now.
Jan 01 I will be paying $82 per ton.

Seems like a significant increase.

That is an increase, but still significantly cheaper than Nat. Gas.

If they don't do so already, I think a lot more people are going to be added to the "living paycheck to paycheck" category.

I wonder if there has ever been a time or place in modern history when people did not complain about the cost of things going up?
In a hundred (or two) years from now people will still be complaining about prices going up, even if it's just the air fare for that holiday on Mars.
The rich will continue to get richer, politician's will still be as inept, and corrupt as usual, and the peasants will just have to suck it up like always.
Oh by the way, Merry Christmas.

You mean the families making more than 100k per year that don't get the full rebate?

What really sucks for me living on the border is I am forced to be on Ab's utility's so I have to pay the carbon tax my Saskatchewan government has the brains/backbone to fight.
