Wage Raises
Just wondering how often some of you get a raise. My employer hasn't given a raise to anyone for the last two years and before that it was five. From what I hear, the last raise was 3% Which was probably 50 cents to a dollar or so for most of the employees.
Just wanted to see how my employer compares to some of you guys and gals.

we have levels of pay. based on experience and applicable courses/schooling (SOLIS), every year we are eligible to move up a level until we reach level 1 or team lead. plus our association bargains for wages every two years so thats usually good for us as well.

We get dayrate raises at 6months, 1 year, and 2years. Anything on dayrate other than that are company profit dependent. I also get salary which is yearly raises but also profit dependent and performance dependent. I've had 4 raises in 2 years but will now be basically once a year if my performance stays up and the company enjoys profitable years.

Everyone around me gets a raise of 1-3% yearly in April however for the last 2 years I haven't gotten anything. I have raised a complaint formally and still nothing changes. And I can almost guarantee I make less then most of ya

We get between 3 and 7% once a year bases on salary grid level and preformance.

Do all union members get the same raise or does the guy who grabs a shovel or broom during down time get more than the guy who heads out for a smoke during downtime? Curious if unions raises are based on seniority or performance? I only get 3 or 4 % increase each year..... I make to much already....

I manage an oilfield service company, we give out wage increases based on employee performances yearly plus we have a profit sharing system that is paid out twice a year. Poor employee performance, no raise. Have you asked for a raise? Many employers will not just give out raises for the hell of it, have a talk with your supervisor regarding it and have a list of reasons why you feel you are entitled to a raise. If you are a good employee there should be no reason that your wage should not reflect it.

It's not me that the thread is referring to, its more so my co workers. I get a raise every year as I am an apprentice (forgot to mention that). But as I am an apprentice they don't include me in the 3% raise if it were to happen. They didn't even back pay me after I finished school last year lol
Almost everyone asks at one point or another and the reason is always "we're working on it" lol

We're working on it for two years lol? I would put a wage increase request in writing and ask for an answer within a week. Trades people are a highly sought after commodity these days, if that was my managements attitude towards their employees I would probably not be working for them. That being said I don't know all the circumstances, I have a few guys who work for me who are topped out on what I can pay them given our industry and they know that. We have perks like profit sharing and other things that we can do as a smaller company to keep and attract employees.

We are currently in the last 4 months of our 2 year collective agreement.
Once into September negotiations will begin on the next agreement.
Of course it's dang near spring or later for anything to be agreed upon, retro pay is the norm.

Union raises are uniform across all jobs, at least from my experience in one. If it was a 2% increase, all jobs received a 2% increase. It's not about your preformance in the union I was in, it's about your seniority and which position it allows you to be the 'winning' bidder on when it becomes available. That being said, there was a 25+ year guy at our mill who would regularly shift around in the entry level positions when they came open. He earned the same as I did for doing the same jobs, but he had 7 weeks vacation and a higher vacation pay rate.

Before I got there it was 5 years that they were working on it lol.
Where I work there is only 3 trades people, myself, my journeyman and an electrician. The rest would be labourers and the foremen. The guys who want the raises are the ones who have been there for 5+ years.
My company is cheap though so who knows if some of the guys are topped out.

I have been given 4 significant raises in the last 5 months since I started with the new Company. (I'm a salaried Foreman)
The problem is that I'm now being held hostage and am never home. Even at home, I spend my free time trying to find people online to work in the Lumber Yard. Golden Handcuffs definitely exist, even in town! Lol!!
The people who I hire though, will get hourly rate increases from me as their performance dictates. If someone is putting in a strong effort, I will give them a bump after a weeks' worth of work in some cases. The Company has a limit though and good workers will get there in their first year.
I love working with good people and I wish they would give me a higher ceiling to reward my premium employees. It is frustrating to train someone, find out that they are indeed the real deal when it comes to quality employees, and then lose them because I couldn't pay them the $2 or $3 more per hour that they are worth.

I get a raise anytime I ask for one, getting the client to pay the higher rate is another matter altogether. One of the perks of being an independent contractor, choosing to price yourself to unemployment.
Seriously though, the essence of getting a raise is to make yourself more valuable the the company. The company is in the business to make a profit and you are a cost, make that cost seem puny compared to the effect you have on the success of the company. Then they have the choice of paying you more or watching you walk over to the competition. Flip that around when you are the boss and you will happily pay more to the real contributors.

We have tech levels that you can advance through, once yearly you can be bumped to the next level. They do salary survey's every couple years and adjust as they see fit and we get the CPI rate as published on the Canadian government website. Tough to complain, although some still do.

Depends on the union. The building trades unions normally get the same across the board , but other unions may have a seniority clause factored in.
Much of it depends on just how the contact is laid out.....
