Default Ouch, what bit me?

I was in a wooded area near Gull lake and had the most excruciating insect bite. The bite felt like someone threw a rock at my head and left a large bump for a day. When the critter took a chunk, it made a distinctive "click". I had another one divebomb me on another day but it hit my shoulder and didn't get through my shirt. Again, I heard the click but no bite.

It was like a horsefly bite x10 and almost brought me to my knees. What is this nasty creature?

A picture or even a description would help greatly.

You would have noticed if it was this guy (Water Bug - Lethocerus uhleri)...

These are the critters that periodically would send a 220lbs oil patch fella screaming like a girl as he is throwing his hard hard and fighting for his life...these buggers hurt.

Seen a few hatless lease dances...funny if your not the guy.

I can't give a description since I didn't see anything either before or after the fact. It was a stealthy and quick attack.

It definitely wasnt the water beetle then... it would sound like someone flying a large drone around your head.

Luckily they fly slow...makes it easier to get them with the electric tennis racket zapper

Maybe a spruce beetle. Black, long antennas. They bite hard. Can be smaller in size and large.

Yes it certainly was. The buggers were everywhere and made that clicking noise. Thought it was like the plague of locusts that Ol Moses pronounced upon the Pharoah and Egyptians.

Sometimes they would fly into my loader when I was dumping logging trucks. Guys used to laugh like hell when I dynamited the brakes and bailed out, hitting the ground running.

Ya my rig manager on service rigs for 2 years fav game was to pick them up carefully with needle noses and get behind you and put them on our collar / shoulder. Had to keep an eye on him flanking ya.

Remember having a sawyer crawl into my coveralls one summer on the rig floor...chain down the brake handle and scream like a little girl while stripping down to my gitch lol

I've had these spruce beetles land on me before but never had one attack so quickly and then be gone In a flash. I'll look for more sign of them next time.
