"We have met the enemy, and he is us."
I like my fellow citizens employed in decent paying jobs. I don't want to see them have to compete directly with third world workers, either through imports or through TFW's being brought over to drive down wages and take jobs. BUT I also like to go to Walmart and buy Chinese or Indian goods because they are cheap and this leaves more money in my wallet for other things. Have to balance altruism with narrow self interest. And I go back and forth in actual practice.
It's similar to the minimum wage arguments we have here. The greedy part of us says there should be no change (or even no minimum wage), while the altruistic part of us is OK with paying more for a hamburger so someone NOT brought in from a third world county and living 4 to an apartment can have a living wage.
Our current economy is just fine if you can get a good education or a trade. Life is looking increasingly tough for folks who don't have the smarts to get some post-secondary education or training. We were temporarily spoiled in this province with the energy industry in that a guy with no education past high school could make big bucks. That's not the norm anywhere else.

Thanks for having my six Okie. I know I can count on you.
You aren't far off on the timing, about 10 years.
Ah what ever happened to those days when it took one parent to work outside the home to provide food and shelter and transportation for his family, and we could all afford to buy 'Made in Canada " or "Made in America"?

What happened to the good old days? Simple answer really.
Our brilliant government decided to over-regulate and over-tax everything and us to death which has made it very expensive to do business in Canada and has eliminated our global competitiveness.
Unless Canada takes the same approach Trump is taking in the USA to make them competitive again, then the good old days in Canada are forever lost.
Don't hold your breath!

Your post makes the most common sense here. Simply put, more people are unable to afford to pay more for locally paid products. Even if you pay more for a supposed "quality, made in North America" products, that doesn't mean it's better made. Having a huge hate on for everything non North American sure is becoming a hot commodity around here. Some people really need to step down from their grandstanding for a bit and realize the world doesn't revolve around your own ideals.

I am quite aware that there are many other variables such as coast of wages over seas vs. NA, and another big one is the artificial cost of living in Canada.
Our food is way over priced thanks to all the boards that set the rates for milk, meat etc, and lets not forget our price for energy which is artificially inflated due to taxes and regulations.

But the same job drain has occurred in the US.

Canada has been getting shafted by the US for a couple of hundred years now.
Rewind to the 1800's, US carried the isolationist ideal. Huge tariffs on anything that could be produced in the States - especially on iron imports. However, the secret got out - the vast majority of goods produced in the USA were contracted to prison labour. Alot of these cheaply produced goods were dumped into the Canadian market. Try competing with that.
Made in Canada is still thought to have stemmed from an American law in the 60's - not so. It was born in the wee 1900's as a battle cry against the US. Made in Canada by Canadian labour ended up being pretty common - but it was voluntary.

Good for you. Tell everyone you meet to work for $5 per hour instead of $20+ and you can live your dream.

Like I said I hire Canadians.

Can't take it back. China is geared to mass produce at the most efficient rate and theres pretty much zero chance North America could go the same way.
North America let a lot of the labour end slide offshore due to higher labour costs.
Trump might want to bring some of those jobs back but as usual he's blowing hot air. Apparently he's not quite so hard line when it comes to articles with the Trump name on them.

You want a Sunbeam fan built in Canada?
Better watch what you wish for, you'll need a good chunk of new immigrants to fill all those jobs. More immigrants. No thanks.
People who want jobs in Canada already have one.
You won't see those jobs coming back to N.A. in our lifetime.
