I’m impressed. 20,000 rounds and never at a human.
Gives me more confidence knowing they (should) be very proficient with the weapon from all the practice. Should they need it.

Why do they keep calling their military style assault rifles carbines?

This is the best national news I’ve heard all day.

They should invite members from the LPS over for some training. Then they wouldn’t have to use their patrol cars!

That they had H&K's in the first place indicates that there was a gunnie in charge of their procurement. Get 'em some Colt's or Daniel Defense, with the number of training rounds those guys burn through they'll want something with cold hammer forged barrels for a bit more service life.

Probably not as far fetched as some would think. I knew a cop who practiced with the gophers on his acreage.

There may well have been more rounds through those rifles than were bought by the department, they could easily have another 5K each through them if the officers bought some of their own ammo (such as for home gopher eradication).

Town Council had the right attitude in approving the cost. Lots of Councils would be wondering if the Canadian Ranger's old rifles were somehow available.

Am I the only one wondering why a small municipality needs "Patrol Carbines"?

a variant of which was reportedly used by U.S. Navy Seal Team Six to kill Osama bin Laden in May 201

Does Mayerthorpe ring a bell? Plus of course with rural officers often needing to dispatch wounded animals that might be best kept at a distance. They need them, they just don't need the most Gucci ones available with the most expensive and hard-to-get repair parts.

The H&K's are rather spendy, not sure why they had them, aside from whomever got to order them was obviously a gun nut and whomever approved the purchase was not very attuned to what to budget for them. The H&K's have a unique upper & bolt carrier group but the lower receiver is pretty much normal AR-15. Instead of a gas tube directing pressure and powder residue into the receiver, they're got a piston system, so the upper runs cooler and cleaner.

why do they need Carbines, all the bad guns are off the street now, so no more gun violence to be found in Canada. Their Handguns should do the job.

Default HK416 assault rifle

The HK 416 is marketed as an assault rifle.

Someone correct me if I've got my math wrong: 15 officers, four HK416 assault rifles, over 20,000 rounds through each rifle totaling more than 80,000 rounds over a period of 11 years (2009-2020). Works out to 5,333 rounds per officer or 484 rounds each year or 40 rounds a month for each officer over this 11 year time period.

That's not a lot of gophers, maybe they're also helping to keep Alberta "rat free".

They actually do lots of training with them. They just had pictures of them training at night on their Facebook page a lil bit ago. They have their own range for training and can use the new range that was built outside of town also

I wonder how much of Taber's problems have to do with a certain group that moved up from Mexico? Hmmmm.....

Never mind. I already know the answer to that one.

They also enter law enforcement competitions.
Need to practice for them, an no doubt that ammo expenditure is included from said competition's

I'm curious about the mentions of a group in Taber that's not exactly the Boy Scouts, can anyone share on this? Or is that best left to mention through PM?

Well, if they can be all over the news, I don't see why I can't mention them. My family settled in Taber and Purple Springs area, so I'm quite familiar with it....and I also happened to marry a Mennonite girl from Lacrete who grew up in Bolivia. Spent some time down in Bolivia and saw the Mexican Mennonite colonies that relocated there. Can't even begin to say what I thought....

You can watch the documentary on it from YouTube. Can’t remember if it’s 60 minutes or fifth estate or something like that. Try key words Taber, drugs, Mexico, hudderite........(or Mennonite....can’t remember)

CBC had a mini series on the Mexican Mennonite connection.

Also.

All I'll say is there is a lot of TFW driving around in Escalades in the Taber area, not sure how they afford them?

When some of the locals import 15,000 pounds of cocaine at a time, with ties to the Juarez Cartel, I think it's totally ok that the local cops practice lots and have top of the line patrol carbine/military style assault weapons....they may just need them.
