Default What to do?

So.. at 10 this morning I noticed a nice bicycle behind our condo building and noticed it wasn't locked up. It is a nice bike probably worth 4 or 5 hundred. So I go down to check it out and take the serial number and leave it where it was left. I also noticed on the rear fork someone wrote "F*** the police" with a marker so I am sure it is a stolen bike.

I call the City Police to see if they are interested. They check the serial number and it is not registered as stolen. They said they would pick it up 8 hours ago and still haven't. I know it is the lowest priority and they probably hope someone else steals it so they don't have to deal with it.

So what do I do? Just leave it there until the next guy steals it. Do I wait until tomorrow and if it is still there do I bring it in and post it on lost bike sites? The police couldn't do anything to me because it is not considered stolen at this stage. If no one claims it could it considered a found item and claimed? If the police don't pick it up by tomorrow do I call back?

It is a nice bike and it would be nice to go for a ride. And I'm sure someone is sad they lost their bike.

Opinions anyone...

Grab bike, put "lost bike?" add on local social media.

Ask for description before returning..

Check bikeindex.org

Might be listed on there. I suspect the Police may have checked that already, however.

You could post it there as well as it'd be a good place for the owner to look.

Interesting that Calgary Police would say they would pick it up.
I stopped reporting stolen bikes when Edmonton Police asked me to deliver them to the community station.

They love unclaimed bikes, get to sell them and put money in the kitty.

Put a lock on it with your phone number. When the "owner" comes back they will call you. Or when the police get there, they will call you. Meanwhile it stays put.
