I figure, if it comes to it, it's gonna be close and personal, so I usually carry a shot gun in non hunting situations.

Most times I head out for a hike it's to do some target practice. Stump shooting is a great way to hone shooting skills applicable to hunting. Bear defence is usually pretty far down the list for reasons to pack. If bears are a concern then a suitable rifle or shotgun gets carried. If not a smaller caliber hunting rifle comes along. My truck gun is usually a coyote capable caliber

I never have , even in my younger days when I shed hunted in prime grizzly habitat or put the miles on fishing the creeks . Maybe I'm one of the lucky ones but I was always aware of bear sign and made a lot of noise when I came across fresh scat or tracks . Had a few close run ins but we just made eye contact and we went in different directions.

I often have a firearm with me when I'm doing chores for predator/varmint control.
It was a .22 or 12 gauge loaded with bird shot for the most part but with more bears and cats been seen around here I have been carrying a .243 or the 12 gauge with buck shot.

I always pack my 870 shotgun while checking cameras, hanging stands etc.
It’s a shorty with an 18” barrel. I load it alternating slug and 00 buck.
The areas I hunt have a good population of bears, wolves and cougars.

I carry either a scout rifle in .308 or a .223 bolt gun for predator control while at work.

When random camping or remote hikes/fishing in bear country I keep my rifled 870 12 gauge with slugs handy. Hikes in farm country not so much....

When out at my camper on my own private land I bring a 3030 marlin for yogi. When checking my bear baits it's either a 870 or the 3030. Usually a .22 for plinking.
