Default Bushcraft

Anybody into bushcraft?

First got interested in from watching videos about blinds and tree stands.
I much prefer using nature instead of store bought things.

There are some cool videos on you tube.

I've always wanted to build a little camp back in the bush but none of my hunting partners are really into it.

Ya my hunting partners are more into RV-craft. Bushcraft not so much. If you hang a rain tarp they stare mesmerized like you're Bear Grylls!

I'd like to know if anyone has actual experience with things like primitive windlass or tripod for hoisting meat. How about a travois for hauling game out? I've got plenty of armchair experience but you know how that works out in the real world.

Thumbs up

My brother and I still dabble with bushcraft to this day when we hunt.
I got the bug back in grade 6 when we read My Side of the Mountain in class.
I read that book after about a dozen times. Then came Wildwood Wisdom. Another fantastic book.
I spent the better part of March watching YouTube guys doing their thing.
Greg Ovens Bushcraft 30 day Challenge was a hoot.

Calgary. Years ago friends and I actually scouted spots west of here for building a camping shelter, but got busy, got schooled, got moved away, got married, got back.
It would be fun to build but not practical for my hunting/fishing use since I tend to get wanderlust and you gotta be mobile for elk.
I suggest throw a comment in the hunting partner thread

There is a book .. BushCraft, by Mors Korchansky, an Alberta resident, that would be invaluable to someone interested in learning some very useful info.
It costs about $20.00.

I just ordered Mors' book, can't wait. He seemed like such a humble, interesting renaissance type.

It’s difficult to be a hunter/camper without using a modicum of bushcraft skills.

Get an idea in your head of building a little shelter

Go and do it. Figure it out as you go. You will teach yourself.

Go slow, think your way through it.

I think Kochanski is good if you want to be a pioneer in the vein of Dick Proeneke, but not really for the Weekend Warrior.

He had a wealth of knowledge. I did a weekend bushcraft camp with him in the early 90's on his property NE of Edson. He knew some pretty amazing things about survival/shelter building and was an interesting guy that would think "outside the box". Sadly I heard he passed away in December 2019....

As a youngster, I bought Harding’s Deadfalls and snares book. Over a few years I was able to take four skunks and a fox using a couple of deadfalls built with fence poles and rocks. Would have died from hunger if that was my food source.

That’s fair, they want to hunt. You should head out for a few days over Christmas or something.
