Canadian unsportsmanlike athletes
Well another poor showing by a Canadian athlete, I think leave your medal on till you get in the dressing room.

they were competing for gold
sure getting silver is a letdown and in the heat of the moment would not want to wear it proudly. time will make them appreciate the effort of the silver more. they were beaten by a better team that seriously out skated them in over time forcing the shoot out. I have no problem with her taking it off at that moment. She kept it personal and did not do a big public display about the disappointment. Some people smash their stick on the goal post others show their disappointment more discretely.

Exactly and she will look upon this medal with older eyes, respect the effort and remember her teams wins and losses. Can't do it now to young to fully appreciate it that will come with time.

Not as bad as the American fake half pipe athlete competing for Hungary. That was down right funny.

Up until recently, it was considered common courtesy for the OP to include a link in post #1.
Apparently, that's gone by the wayside for some now. I guess it takes too much effort

She can feel free to turn down the money the Canadian government pays for a silver to.

No one trains to win silver.
I don't blame her at all
Being “satisfied “ with second place is wrong
Id like the Olympics to only give out gold medals

I disagree, lots of people train for silver, bronze, even finishing. The Olympics is filled with athletes that know they have no chance of winning. They compete to compete, and there is no shame in doing your best and coming up short.

Yup. You don't "Win" silver. You lose gold. Perfectly fine to be upset in the moment.

Include women's curler Rachel Holman who immediately removed a rock that had been slight touched by a sweeper just as the rock was coming to a stop. The resulting position of the rock would have been the same whether it was touched or not.

Did she take the medal and throw it in the stands like the junior hockey player from Sweden ?? Not that I saw.
Its been years since I have played competitive sports, and I know what it is like to lose. In fact I was never on a winning team in anything, and we never got a ribbon or medal for participation.
These girls played their hearts out for their country, and for each other. They were physically and emotionally drained.
They lost in a shootout (the shootout has to go), but they will get over it. They were extremely disappointed, and rightfully so. In time they will be proud of their accomplishments, and proud of their silver medal.
Please cut them some slack.

That game is like the Stanley Cup for those women, she has every right to not be satisfied with 2nd place Silver. Hockey is a different sport when you lose in the finals, always seems to remain a sore spot.

Part of competing is losing with grace and dignity. Disrespectful behavior has no part in any sport regardless of how you want to couch it.

Womens hockey shouldn't have a silver medal. It's only ever the Canadians and the Americans. It's getting predicable and boring to watch the same contenders for 20 years in a row.

Yep that’s how I look at it. The spirit of the olympics is not to be a poor sport. Just cause your a Canadian playing hockey doesn’t mean you should automatically be handed gold just for showing up. I lost respect for team canada when they adopted the gold or nothing attitude. Be proud of your accomplishment! sure it wasn’t what you wanted but there are hundreds of others that would have been proud to Bring silver home to their nation!

x2. Think of all the work and sacrifice her family, friends, hockey associations and yes, taxpayers have made to get her there. Suck it up princess.

I apply it to everything
Second or third place sucks. In business, jobs, war, etc
I just dont see the value or honour in accepting loss, and showing disapproval is acknowledging and demonstrating that.
If people are accepting of loss, how do we improve? Do we just settle into mediocrity and find someone to blame for it?

I had no idea what this thread was about nor did I even notice anything out of the ordinary after the game last night (although it was late and I wasn’t really interested in the medal presentation portion). I probably wouldn’t have known any better if not for this thread.
I get that there’s a great deal of disappointment but I’m not a fan of these little hissy fits. Put the medal on and do what you want with it once you get in the dressing room behind closed doors. There’s no need to make a spectacle of yourself that reflects negatively on the country that you are representing.

This is definitely a good way of looking at it.
