If you can find an older wingmaster, they are great guns, yes!
The 870 Express normally is also a good gun, and a very inexpensive way to shoot steel, but sometimnes they need a bit of tweaking to get them running really smooth.
I buy them quite often when see them fora deal.

x2 I purchased 3 of them about 5 or 6 years ago new and everyone jammed on every kind of ammo I was not impressed but a gunsmith I know showed me a trick with some fine steel wool and a drill to polish the chambers took about 5 minutes of time and the one I kept has been killing geese and ducks without fail since so they can be very good but like cat said may require some minor care first.

I use a strip of ScotchBrite pad and a Dewalt cordless.
The drill is standard equipment in my truck during Sunday range time!!

Any of the pump shotguns in the 400 price range would serve you well, get to a store and shoulder them. Really there's not much quality difference just various designs. Nice thing about the 870 is all the aftermarket options however the Winchester pump sure caught my eye last time I was in!

It's often quite possible to pick up a used 37 Ithaca for a decent price as well, and although i personally do not like them, I think the are a very well built gun, super reliable, and highly underated!
I could never like th egrip or the botom loading system for them - I do own one however!
The Mossbergs seem to be a good price point with lots of accessories available as well.....

Checkout the Winchester SXP as well. Decently priced and although I haven't shot one, I did handle it at WSS and I feels great in the shoulder. Reviews for it are very good as well.

I don't own one but hear they are well built. Whats your intended use? I see your name is Redneck fly fisher, are you planning on carrying it while out fly fishing? I ask this because I own a Winchester defender and a Mossberg maverick, and even though the defender is built better, cycles faster and feels better, I always grab the maverick if I plan on carrying it while out fishing because it is noticeably lighter and goes bang just the same...

Love my 870 Wingmaster, never had a problem and highly recommend one. Cat is right about the Ithaca's....highly under rated shotgun but I recommend as the other fellow members did....go shop around, shoulder one and get one that suites your budget but most importantly that feels right to your shoulder and swing. Congratz on your PAL and welcome to the wonderful world of sport and game shooting.

If you want kind of an "all around gun" if you can manage to find the feild/defense package for the winchester sxp pump i would recomend it. It comes with a 28" feild barrel with3chokes and a 18" cylender bore defence barrel. I have that setup and love the inertia driven pump and super soft recoil pad.the only downside is less aftermarket stuff than the 870 and a slightly higher price tag.

if it's an Express, it likely did , just because!!
I usually go right threogh any rifle or shotgun I get before selling it, just to make sure it's good to go.

Personally own a Remington 870 and two Mossberg 500s, all of them perform flawlessly. Remingtons are around 400 bucks and a great buy. Mossbergs feel lighter and cheaper, but I find they work well.

Default first shotgun

Sorry fellas, not trying to knock the wingmaster as I have one and love it. My first shotgun was a model 12 winchester, it's a real quality piece. Do not overlook one if the opportunity presents itself. If you don't believe me,ask Cat! It is still my favorite and goto shotgun.

The M12's had indestructible barrels, but that being said, I wouldn't shoot steel out of 0ne with a full choke!!
A bit on the heavy side for an upland gun IMO.
That being said, I still own one!!
Good guns that you can pick up in field series for about $200 at times, hone them out to modified with a brake hone, and give 'er!!

My 870 express took about 100 round before it wouldn't jam on 3 inch load but now it works perfectly but kinda regret not buying the Winchester but it got a plastic stock and I have yet to buy a gun that doesn't have a wood stock

Right into the chamber .
I'll post up a new thread on how to do it this weekend!
That way, others who also have good tips can also post in .
