The Wheat Board?
I have no where else to ask this question, and you guys are very well informed on many topics. Has the elimination of the wheat pool helped the farmers?
I only know a few and for them (the middle of Sask) they have wheat that they can't sell.
This was a big deal when the Feds sold off the pool, what is the experience here, has it been a help or a hindrance?

Cross border selling
With the free trade agreement and now that the CWB is controlled out of Saudi Arabia and New York could you set up an export company in Sask and get the stuff sold getting US dollars?
Should be a free market now that CWB does not control you.

The problem I see is that very few farmers have enough volume to be their own exporter.

Best thing that ever happened. The CWB usually wouldn't take all your wheat either, they decided what and when you were going to deliver and then you had the priviledge of waiting 18months for your money.
Why can't they sell their wheat?

Place I'm working, they're shipping next week. Can't sell , or can't ship ? Neighbor couldn't ship his canola till last March, which affected Spring work and of course, no payment. Still at the mercy of the Middle Men.

Same. I don't hear anyone complaining about it being gone.

The railroads have been holding up shipments, they are too busy moving oil to move grain. Shipping grain has a regulated payment rate, oil doesn't, it's a no brainier why they are moving more oil, they have an obligation to maximize shareholder returns. More government interference in the market causing problems.

I'm in the, "good riddance" crowd. Always found it insulting that the cwb could tell me when and how much of what I could sell, and at what price.........and then hang onto my money for over a year.
I grew mostly off board grains in those days just so I didn't have to deal with them any more than necessary.
Lot's of markets/options available, just have to search them out.

The CWB was an inefficient drain amongst the Canadian wheat trade.
Having them gone has put more money into the pockets of everyone else involved.
Good riddance!!

Monopoly
Government run business monopoly is bad news for the country any time.
Wheat board was, Alberta health care is. Some provinces have govt. insurance. Workers compensation now for farmers only from the Govt.
What other ways are Govt. elected and appointed officials out there trying to manage businesses they know little or nothing about?

I just read an article earlier today about the CWB. It was brought in by the liberals, Mitchell Sharp during the second world war under the war measures act, to control the price of wheat.
After the war it was left in place.
i believe income taxes were also temporary.LOL>

My father, bless his memory, avoided the Wheat Board every chance he had. He made more money selling "off board" grain than what he did by HAVING to sell his wheat through the board. His reasoning-"Why should I sell through the Wheat Board and wait for 30-40% of MY money for another 18 months." He had a major problem with being restricted by the quota system that the Board had. He would sit on his deck and watch as CN rolled by, commenting, "There go my 5 more cars of our barley", as he quaffed his beer.

Ontario was pointedly exempted.

Glad it's gone. I can now sell my wheat when I want. Already sold over half of it off the combine at a profit. Never would have happened with the cwb!
